Substation Civil Engineer - Kiewit Power Engineering

Position Overview As an entry-level Substation Civil Engineer in the Power Delivery department, you will support all aspects of the construction process by performing innovative design engineering, brainstorming conceptual designs, reviewing structural calculations, developing plans, scheduling tasks to meet client needs, and mitigating risk to keep construction crews safe. Location This position can be based out of Lenexa, KS or Omaha, NE. Responsibilities Design and analyze new and existing substation and transmission structures and foundation systems. Prepare and review drawing and calculation packages. Apply and review departmental and industry standards when preparing calculations, project drawings, and specifications for procurement and construction. Incorporate the requirements of the EPC contract, RFPs, service agreements, or other contractual requirements ensuring projects meet or exceed goals. Identify and propose value engineering or cost‑effective options and process improvement opportunities. Coordinate with internal and external partners including cross‑discipline teams, construction, vendors, fabricators, and owners on structural issues, constructability reviews, and RFIs. Prepare, monitor, and update project plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets (e.g., new scope or change orders) for project and department management. Support department managers in achieving performance goals. Apply engineering application software (e.g., foundation and steel structure design). Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering from an ABET‑accredited four‑year program. 0–2 years of structural design engineering experience in the Power/Industrial industry preferred. Proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and general computer operations. Knowledge of basic engineering software and willingness to learn, specifically SAP2000, STAAD, SAFE, RISA3D, PLS POLE, PLS TOWER, LPILE, FAD Tools, and MathCAD. General knowledge of engineering standards including ASCE 7, 10, 48, 74, 113, ACI 318, 336, AISC 325, 348, 360, and IBC. Eligibility to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or hold an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification. Legal authorization to work in the United States for any length of time. Strong written and verbal communication skills; fluency in English. Passion to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). Other Requirements Work productively and meet deadlines.
