Statewide Health, Safety, and Wellness, Chief - Hybrid Telework

Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of the Deputy Director, Statewide Quality Improvement (SQI) Division, the incumbent serves as the Statewide Health, Safety and Wellness (SHSW) program Chief, and is responsible for managing daily operations with oversight and coordination responsibilities for statewide employee occupational health and safety programs, emergency planning and preparedness and incident management, Employee Safety and Support Initiative (ESSI), employee wellness and health initiatives, ergonomic services, and specialized technology and project management services focused on employee safety and health. The SHSW Chief supervises the Enterprise Health and Safety Officer (Supervisor I), ESSI lead (Supervisor I), Senior Emergency Services Coordinator (Sr. ESC), and indirectly supervising the Analysts in the SQI/ SHSW Sections. The SHSW Chief serves as the statewide coordinator for the hospital Health and Safety Officers to support policy, procedure and program alignment and employee safety and health initiatives. Involves management analysis, systems development, and project management of complex reports or assignments. The SHSW Chief also serves as Project Sponsor for statewide technology and program projects under the direction of the SQI Division Deputy Director.

Working Conditions

• DSH-S acrame nto is located at an 11-floor high rise building.

• This position reports to the Allenby Building in Sacramento and may be eligible and considered for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies, operational needs, and management approval. Employees are currently required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25 . Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs. 

• The incumbent may also be required to travel upto 20% throughout California as needed, with prior notice.

• Commitment to advancing promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and employee wellness
• Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety and wellness programs, and the ability to integrate those strategies into broader operational and safety and wellness frameworks
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Including experience presenting technical information to diverse audiences
• Strong knowledge of state and federal health and safety regulations (e.g. Cal OSHA, Title 8 and Title 22, and other applicable regulatory bodies)
• Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into clear, actionable policies and procedures
• Expertise in risk assessment, incident investigation, and corrective action planning
• Strong project management skills, including oversight of timelines, resources, and deliverables
• Success using data analytics to identify trends, mitigate risk, and drive continuous improvement
• Skilled facilitator with experience building collaborative partnerships across hospital, department, and internal/external stakeholders
