Rural Alliance for Dignity Mancos Conservation District The mission of the Mancos Conservation District is to promote long-term sustainable use and protection of the Mancos River Watershed. We provide educational, financial, and technical assistance to meet these conservation goals. The Mancos River watershed hosts a diverse group of water users: agricultural producers, the Town of Mancos, recreational water users, Mesa Verde National Park, and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. There are ditches that divert water for various beneficial uses along the Mancos River and its tributaries. Drought and climate change are impacting southwest Colorado. Montezuma County has experienced abnormally dry conditions within the last year and Colorado is likely to continue experiencing climate-related stressors, such as drought, wildfire, and catastrophic flooding. Proactively taking steps toward protecting agricultural, municipal, environmental and recreational uses of Colorado’s water is imperative to maintaining river health and a viable agricultural industry in the face of these changes. The Mancos Conservation District (MCD) is requesting an AmeriCorps member to work alongside our Watershed Coordinator on watershed restoration and conservation efforts throughout the Mancos watershed. The individual will support the implementation of watershed restoration activities, including riparian restoration efforts, as well as help coordinate a variety of MCD programs focused on strengthening the community’s connection to the watershed, assist MCD staff with educational lessons and workshops, and supporting the creation of the community-driven Mancos Watershed Stream Management Plan. Member Duties Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Field visits to perform: Rapid stream riparian assessments R2 Cross river flow surveys Low-tech process-based restoration techniques, such as beaver dam analogs and post-assisted log structures PIT-tagging eDNA sample collection Supporting riparian restoration efforts including invasive species management/removal Assist in the development of the Mancos Watershed Stream Management Plan Collaborative coordination of MCD Projects Garden in a Box NACD Poster Contest MCD Photo Contest Develop and deliver educational River Literacy lessons to students Engage the Mancos Community in workshops and events that help develop a connection to the watershed Organize and implement a community event centered around watershed health and water conservation Create educational outreach materials to share with the community about the importance of watershed health and water conservation, in partnership with the Town of Mancos Program Benefits Living Allowance, Training, Education award upon successful completion of service, Childcare assistance if eligible, Health Coverage.
