Position Overview

The Department Manager - Plumbing Construction will lead the division's overall operations, financial performance, project execution, and team development. This is a strategic leadership opportunity for a construction professional who can build on an established foundation, implement operational improvements, strengthen accountability, and contribute to company-wide business objectives.

The successful candidate will oversee project management, field leadership, estimating, and administrative support while serving as a key member of the company's Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

• Department Leadership: Lead, coach, develop, and hold accountable the Plumbing Construction team, including project managers and field leadership.

• Financial Management: Oversee departmental P&L, revenue, gross margins, profitability, budgets, overhead, expenses, and financial forecasting.

• Operational Oversight: Manage project backlog, workload, staffing, resource allocation, and departmental priorities to meet business objectives.

• Process Improvement: Evaluate existing operations, identify performance gaps, and implement sustainable improvements to processes, organizational structure, and productivity.

• Performance Management: Establish clear expectations, key performance indicators (KPIs), accountability standards, and ownership across the department.

• Project and Risk Management: Monitor significant projects, financial performance, project risks, and operational challenges while maintaining appropriate accountability at the project level.

• Estimating and Business Development: Provide leadership and oversight to estimating, project management, and field operations. Evaluate potential projects based on capacity, capabilities, risk, customer relationships, and profitability.

• Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with general contractors, customers, vendors, and industry partners.

• Strategic Collaboration: Partner with executive leadership and other department managers to address business challenges, identify growth opportunities, and support company-wide initiatives.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial construction, specialty subcontracting, mechanical contracting, or a related construction environment.

• Significant experience leading a construction department, business unit, operations team, or a comparable function.

• Demonstrated responsibility for financial and operational performance, including P&L management, budgeting, forecasting, and profitability.

• Proven ability to improve departmental performance through team development, process improvement, organizational change, and operational strategy.

• Strong understanding of commercial construction project management and field operations.

• Experience overseeing project management, estimating, field operations, and resource planning.

• Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills.

• Ability to manage competing priorities and navigate challenging situations with a collaborative, professional approach.

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

• Mechanical or plumbing construction experience preferred but not required.

Work Environment

• This is a 100% onsite leadership position based in Madison, Wisconsin, with occasional local travel throughout Southern Wisconsin.

• The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
