Job Title: Sheet Metal Foreman – Commercial Roofing and Exteriors
Job Description

This role leads a team of skilled craft personnel in the fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal products, roofing systems, and exterior structures on commercial and industrial construction projects. The position focuses on coordinating day-to-day field operations, ensuring high-quality workmanship, and delivering projects safely, on time, and in compliance with specifications for new construction, renovations, remodels, and repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and schedule daily and weekly work activities for sheet metal and roofing crews on commercial and industrial projects.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of skilled roofers, sheet metal workers, and trades helpers engaged in covering roofs, installing sheet metal systems, and performing related exterior work.
  • Inspect work in progress and upon completion to verify conformance with project specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
  • Oversee the installation, repair, and maintenance of roofing systems, including flats and metal work, as well as related sheet metal and exterior components.
  • Perform and interpret infrared and thermal inspections of roofing systems to identify water infiltration and other issues.
  • Review and evaluate work progress of roofing shop personnel and trades helpers, providing direction, coaching, and feedback as needed.
  • Handle related administrative functions such as participating in hiring decisions and contributing to performance evaluations for roofing shop personnel.
  • Evaluate project requirements and determine roofing and sheet metal material needs for each job.
  • Order and track materials for specific projects to ensure crews have the necessary supplies and equipment on time.
  • Maintain maintenance logs and roof system warranty records, ensuring accurate documentation for roofs under warranty.
  • Meet with bonding company representatives regarding roofs under warranty and address any concerns or issues that arise.
  • Work directly under the general manager, communicating daily about current and upcoming projects, crew needs, and jobsite status.
  • Coordinate with general contractors and other trades on site to support efficient project sequencing and problem resolution.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools safely and effectively to support installation, repair, and tear-off activities as needed.
  • Participate in and oversee tasks related to roofing, siding, exteriors, sheet metal installation, repair, tear-off, concrete work, equipment installation, and general labor.
  • Ensure crews follow safety policies and procedures and maintain a clean, organized jobsite.
  • Support crew scheduling and crew size allocation based on project scope, deadlines, and resource availability.
  • Perform related duties as required to support successful completion of projects and customer satisfaction.
Essential Skills
  • 2–5 years of field experience in roofing, with a focus on flat roofs and metal work.
  • Previous experience overseeing others in commercial or residential construction environments.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools for roofing, sheet metal, and exterior work.
  • Ability to read and follow directions, project plans, and specifications.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision while also leading and supporting a crew.
  • Strong reliability and consistent attendance, with the ability to meet scheduled work hours.
  • Comfort working in a commercial construction setting, including on roofs and exterior structures.
  • Ability to plan and organize work to meet project timelines and quality standards.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with crew members, supervisors, and other trades.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within approximately 50 miles of the primary region as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication, installation, and repair in commercial or industrial projects.
  • Background in roofing tear-off, installation, and maintenance across various roofing systems.
  • Exposure to siding, exterior cladding, and related exterior construction work.
  • Experience performing or supporting infrared and thermal inspections of roofing systems.
  • Familiarity with maintaining maintenance logs and warranty documentation for roofing systems.
  • Experience coordinating with general contractors and multiple subcontractors on active jobsites.
  • Comfort working with crews ranging from small teams to larger groups, depending on project size.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to either the shop or jobsite, as required.
  • Ability to adapt to seasonal variations in workload and hours, including increased hours during peak seasons.

Work Environment

The role operates in a commercial construction environment with a primary focus on small to mid-size projects, and occasional large-scale projects. Work is typically performed on active jobsites involving roofing, sheet metal, siding, exteriors, and related construction tasks, often at heights and in varying weather conditions. The normal schedule runs Monday through Friday, generally from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with hours varying by project. During winter months, weekly hours typically range from 36 to 40, while spring through fall often ranges from 40 to 50 hours, with the possibility of additional time during peak periods. Most work occurs within the local county, with occasional travel up to approximately 50 miles as needed; for certain traveling jobs, travel arrangements and per diem may be available. Team members may meet at the shop each morning and ride in a company truck to the jobsite, or travel directly to the jobsite when appropriate. Crew sizes typically range from 2 to 10 people, depending on project scope, fostering a collaborative, hands-on environment that relies on standard construction tools, equipment, and safety gear.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
