RN - PCU About Facility 304 Turner McCall Blvd, Rome, GA 30165 361 licensed beds Level 2 Trauma Designation Teaching Hospital with Residency Program Chest Pain Center Stroke Center Department Information Minimum Experience Required: 2 years in requested specialty First-time travelers: Will consider, but not preferred Patient Types / Common Diagnoses Emergency Department (ED) Medical-Surgical Floors 3 MedSurg (Overflow & Difficult to place patients – 27 beds): Syncope, fever and chills, intractable nausea/vomiting, failure to thrive, cellulitis, vascular dementia, cerebrovascular disease, history of CVA. 3 North (Oncology – 20 beds): Immunocompromised patients, cancer patients, end-of-life care, respite, palliative care, chemotherapy infusions. (This floor will be moving to 2 MedSurg in the Northeast building soon.) 4 East (Ortho – 16 beds): Medical and surgical orthopedic patients including fractures (open & closed), motor vehicle collisions, trauma, Buck’s traction. 4 South (General Surgery & Trauma – 36 beds): Ureteral stones, goiter, hernia, uterine fibroids, renal mass, diverticulitis with perforation, MVC, trauma, bowel obstruction, breast cancer for mastectomy, hematuria (irrigation), fetal demise, dilation and curettage (DNC). 4 Central (Pulmonology – 22 beds): Acute respiratory failure, hyperglycemia, sepsis, metabolic encephalopathy, dementia, COPD, acute kidney injury, failure to thrive, pneumonia. (This floor uses Glucommander). 6 Central (Vascular & Bariatric Surgery – 19 beds): End-stage renal disease, foot ulcers, peripheral vascular disease, morbid obesity (vascular and gastric bypass surgeries), also uses Glucommander. Critical Care Areas 4 West (Neurology Stepdown – 23 beds): Stroke, seizures, back pain, lumbar surgery, post-craniotomy, lumbar drains, altered mental status (AMS), aphasia. (Uses Glucommander, cardiac titratable drips). 5 West (Cardiac Stepdown – 34 beds): Chest pain, post-cardiac angiography with or without PTCA, congestive heart failure (CHF), cardiomyopathy, pneumonia, palpitations, syncope, arrhythmias, angioedema, hyponatremia, AMS, sepsis, acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, heart block. (Uses Glucommander, cardiac titratable drips, and aquapheresis). Observation Unit (Decision Unit & Overflow for 5 West – 11 beds): Facial numbness, coronary artery disease (CAD), atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response (RVR), stroke‑like symptoms, chest pain, right or left‑side weakness, acute respiratory failure. (Uses cardiac titratable drips, bedside cardiac monitors in all rooms). ICU (Medical, Surgical, Neuro, Cardiac – combined – 26 beds): Drug overdose, psychosis, myocardial infarction (MI), subarachnoid hemorrhage, MVC, sepsis, acute renal failure (ARF), abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), acute hypoxic respiratory failure, hypoglycemia, pneumonia, suicide attempts. (Patients may be on Life Link, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), intra‑aortic balloon pump (IABP). Travelers are not assigned CRRT and IABPs.) Required Licenses, Certifications, and Position‑Specific Requirements ED RN: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and CPI (CPI offered if not currently held) ICU RN: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, CPI (CPI offered if not currently held); TNCC preferred PCU and Med/Tele RN: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, CPI (CPI offered if not currently held) Required Skills ED RN: ER skills including arrhythmia monitoring, sedation, paralytics, titratable drips knowledge, central venous pressure (CVP) monitoring, care for post‑craniotomy patients, TPA administration. TNCC certification is mandatory; CEN preferred. ICU RN: ICU skills including arrhythmia monitoring, sedation, paralytics, titratable drips knowledge, CVP monitoring, care for post‑craniotomy patients, TPA administration. CCRN and TNCC preferred. PCU RN: PCU skills including arrhythmia monitoring and knowledge of cardiac titratable drips. Med/Tele RN: Basic arrhythmia interpretation, Foley catheter irrigation, patient‑controlled analgesia (PCA), epidural, continuous passive motion (CPM), Buck’s traction, drains and chest tube management. Nursing skills with knowledge of cardiac drips, neurological, cardiac, pulmonary, orthopedic, trauma, and surgical patient care. Note: Two nurses are required to place Foley catheters. Patient‑to‑Nurse Ratios MedSurg: Days 1:5 (may increase to 1:6 during staffing crises), Nights 1:6 ICU: Days and Nights 1:2 (may increase to 1:3 depending on acuity) High Acuity Unit (PCU level): 1:3 Department Support CNA / Nurse Technicians Respiratory Therapists Phlebotomists Educator Staffing Specialist Timekeeper / Payroll Specialist Safety Sitters Virtual Patient Observers (VPO) Virtual RN (currently on 4 West) Security Technology and Equipment Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC Department‑specific equipment varies by unit and includes Glucommander, cardiac monitors, Precision BBG monitor, specialty beds, alarms, bed and chair alarms, BiPAP, ventilators, Alaris pumps, Virtual RN, and Virtual Patient Observer systems. Floating Policy Floating occurs across all MedSurg and Critical Care areas, including ED boarders. ICU and ER nurses may also float within these areas. Orientation First week: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Second week: 2-3 days of departmental orientation on the floor Scheduling Weekend rotation: Every other weekend On‑call: Rarely required; may be asked if census is low Holiday coverage: Expected to work 70% of holidays Return to Office (RTO) Requests: Up to 7 days approved if participating in SimpliFi Clinical Interviewing and contract is extended accordingly Shift times: 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 7:00 am for MedSurg and Critical Care; ER shift times may vary Schedule cycle length: 13 weeks Additional Information Scrub color: Navy Parking: Free Department culture emphasizes teamwork, working as one group, speaking up when help is needed, assisting others proactively, and timely response to call lights and rover phones.
