Job Description: 

PATIENT POPULATION:

The patient population served is all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Department Leadership, the Clinical Nutritional Manager is responsible to plan, coordinate, and manage patient nutritional care activities and comply with the standards established by regulatory agencies. The Clinical Nutritional Manager will collaborate with the Food and Nutrition Director for safe food handling, emergency food supplies, employee's performance, menu planning, QAPI programs, and any other operational responsibilities. The CNM will assume 24-hour, seven-day responsibility, authority and accountability for assuring nutritional compliance.

The participant integrates their department’s services with the Hospital’s primary functions and overall plan for care delivery and other departments. The participant develops and reviews annually house-wide and unit specific policies and where appropriate, coordinate policies with other primary functions and/or departments. The participant achieves and documents desired staffing to patient ratios within targeted goals. The participant determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel who provide Patient Care Services and who are not licensed independent practitioners. The participant is involved directly and/or supports subordinate participation in the Performance and Improvement process as measured by active participation in Quality Council activities annually, recommends capital equipment and physical space and resources appropriate to patient care needs and selects, orients, evaluates performance and competency of outside contractors and vendor services. In departments with 24/7 operations, the Leader will assume full responsibility, authority and accountability 24-hour, seven days a week to ensure that the department and all individuals in the department meet the mission and service expectations related to delivering appropriate patient care.

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

Your position has been defined as exempt (Exempt employees are paid on a salary basis as their duties may include more complex tasks that require them to work inconsistent or longer hours on a weekly basis. EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

If becoming a Registered Dietitian prior to 12/31/2023, a Bachelors degree in Nutrition or Dietetics is required. If becoming a Registered Dietitian after 1/1/2024, a Masters or Doctorate degree is required. These requirements are based on guidelines required by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

Minimum of twelve (12) months professional work experience in clinical nutrition as a Registered Dietitian required.

Spanish speaking preferred. 

Proficient in reading and interpreting various documents, including safety guidelines, operational procedures, maintenance instructions, and manuals. Capable of preparing routine reports and correspondence as needed. Ability to speak and write in English, with the ability to write clearly, comprehend verbal and written instructions, and follow directions accurately.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a Registered Dietitian or registration-eligible with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must obtain 75 CEU's every five (5) years to maintain CDR.

ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification is encouraged.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Responsible for managing and documenting employee performance, conducting investigations when necessary, and engaging in crucial conversations to address performance, conduct, or workplace concerns. Accountable for ensuring consistency, and timely application of organizational standards and policies. Performing these duties with professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity.
• Regular, punctual attendance and physical presence at the assigned work location and workstation, ready to perform job duties at the scheduled start time.
• Establishes and maintains policies, standards, and programs for the provision of optimal, cost-effective nutritional care to patients, residents, and visitors. Includes Medical Nutrition Therapy in direct care of medical diseases across the continuum of care.
• Maintains a current Quality Improvement Program, as outlined in the Performance Improvement Manual and in accordance with the Facility's QI Program, to monitor the quality and appropriateness of patient care. Conducts chart review on a timely basis to ensure Clinical Dietitian's competencies.
• Maintains the Diet Manual and customizes the Manual as necessary, to meet the regulatory guidelines.
• Schedules Clinical Dietitians to ensure staffing coverage per policy and regulation including Acute Hospital, Cancer Center and Distinct Skilled Nursing Facility and Food Service Department.
• In collaboration with the Food and Nutrition Service Director, plans fiscal year budget.
• Provides food, nutrition, and culinary expertise in the design, development and production of food products and menus, including selecting ingredients, methods of preparation, and nutrient analysis of recipes.
• Performs Human Resource function: Interviews, selects and trains Clinical Dietitians to ensure that qualified staff is employed. Performs progressive discipline, including termination.
• Develops patient menus and emergency menus using database systems for evaluating nutritional composition, foodservice and nutrition system management software and web-based applications, i.e. CBORD
• Evaluates patient meal acceptance and makes rounds to all units.
• Plans and oversees intern training experiences, evaluates student performance and progress and mentors them during their supervised practice experience.
• Applies NCP (Nutrition Care Process) of individuals when charting in EHR: 1) conducts nutrition assessments, 2) diagnoses nutrition problems, 3) develops nutrition related goals and objectives, 4) establishes, implements and provides ongoing management and revision of interventions.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

• Coordinates clinical activities, including determining guidelines for nutritional intervention to ensure that patients/residents at highest nutritional risk receive appropriate care in a timely manner.
• Promotes effective working relations with the Medical Staff, Nursing, Pharmacy, Education Department and Nutrition to provide a coordinated approach to patient/resident care and community out-reach programs.
• Implements and documents In-Service Education Programs for Registered Dietitian to provide continuing education and training.
• Identifies patients requiring nutrition intervention, intervention is timely and nutrition assessments are accurate and appropriate. Recommends, performs and interprets test results as related to nutrition status and be able to classify for malnutrition and obesity.
• Manages outpatient education program/affiliation -CDAPP (California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program). Works with doctor's office and schedules patients for 1:1 Diet Management. Schedules follow up visits as needed.
