Speech Language Pathologist

Identifies, assesses and provides appropriate treatment for communication and swallowing function and their disorders. Counsels individuals with disorders of communication and swallowing function, their families, caregivers and other service providers about the disability and its management. Maintains a high level of professional expertise and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Evaluates and develops a treatment plan.
• Demonstrates a firm grasp of patient management.
• Promotes effective communication and demonstrates cooperation and teamwork within the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy departments, the facility, and other contacts.
• Contributes to the efficient and safe operation of the department.

Skills (Qualifications, Experience, Judgment):

• Must be eligible to practice speech-language pathology and has license through the University of the State of New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, Division of Professional Licensing Services and practices in accordance with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association preferred practice patterns.

Qualifications: Requires either a master's or doctoral degree and New York State licensure. Requires in-depth knowledge in the application of principles, methods and procedures of measurement, prediction, non-medical diagnosis, testing, counseling, consultation, rehabilitation and instruction related to the development and disorders of speech, voice, and/or language for the purpose of preventing, ameliorating or modifying such disorder conditions in individuals and/or groups of individuals.

Working Conditions Lifting requirements: Heavy - Includes prolonged sitting, and occasional lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds (with assistance) with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or more.

Categories of Exposure:

• Involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them. (Use of appropriate protective measures are required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.)
• Physical, mental and verbal abuse from patients.
• Continual activity all day long including sitting, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling equipment and patients.
• Frequent compromise of schedule to meet needs of patients, their families and co-workers.
• Work hours may include weekday, evening, weekend and emergency coverage.
