Location:This position is with INDOT’s Bluffton Sub-District. Pay Rate:This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Mechanic Positions: Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows:Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components.Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.Perform minor body repair work.Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.Order and/or pick up parts when required by the supervisor.Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.Coordinates work assigned by the Shop Foreman and reports problems as needed.Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.The job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. What You'll Need for Success: Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.A degree is not required. However, at least a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) diploma and at least 1+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
