Part-Time Chief Clinic Veterinarian and Surgeon

Job Title

Performs advanced professional veterinary medical and surgical work in support of Animal Services operations.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Serves as Veterinarian of Record for the City of Burlington Animal Services Department's Spay & Neuter Clinic of Alamance County (SNCAC).
• Performs high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and other surgical and medical procedures.
• Conducts examinations, diagnostics, and treatment of animals; develops and implements medical care plans.
• Ensures the scope of practice is maintained with a low-cost community preventative care focus, primarily serving small animal clients.
• Provides veterinary care and consultation for animals that are clients of the SNCAC and occasionally at the Burlington Animal Services Clinic.
• Develops, implements, and monitors standard operating procedures related to animal health, surgery, infectious disease control, and patient care at the SNCAC in coordination with the Animal Services Director or designee.
• Ensures compliance with established industry standards, including those recommended by the Humane Alliance and the Association of Shelter Veterinarians.
• Assists with the selection, scheduling, training, and performance of staff and/or contract veterinarians working in the SNCAC in coordination with the Senior Manager- Veterinary Services and Animal Services Director.
• Ensures medical records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with regulatory requirements; develops documentation standards and provides training to staff.
• Administers vaccinations and participates in department-sponsored public vaccination clinics.
• Provides training and guidance to staff on veterinary assisting, animal care, handling, and related topics.
• Maintains compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, including controlled substances requirements.
• Notifies the City promptly, in writing, of any complaints, litigation, or professional disciplinary actions.
• Collaborates with the Senior Manager of Veterinary Services and the Animal Services Director to establish and maintain effective clinic operations and policies.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of veterinary medicine, surgery, and animal health practices.
• Knowledge of high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter principles and shelter medicine standards.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, including rabies control and controlled substances regulations.
• Skill in performing surgical procedures and medical diagnostics.
• Ability to exercise sound professional judgment in clinical and regulatory matters.
• Ability to maintain accurate medical records and documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff, stakeholders, and the public.
• Ability to train and supervise veterinary staff and support personnel.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of three (3) years of clinical veterinary experience, preferably including high-volume spay/neuter or shelter medicine experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:

• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of North Carolina and in good standing with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board.
• Eligible for registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and applicable state agencies for controlled substances.
• Professional liability insurance coverage.
• Accreditation with the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS), as required.
• Active membership in professional organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association.

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work requires the ability to perform surgical procedures, handle animals safely and humanely, and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, lifting, and manual dexterity. Work may involve exposure to animals, zoonotic diseases, and controlled substances. Special Note The City will cover costs associated with required professional licenses, memberships, and continuing education necessary to maintain licensure. The City will reimburse costs for professional liability insurance.
