Senior Marine Structural Engineer - Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers
Kiewit
Position Overview Kiewit is seeking a Senior Marine Structural Engineer to play a key technical leadership role on complex ports, marine, waterfront, and coastal resiliency projects. This position offers the opportunity to influence the planning, analysis, design, rehabilitation, and construction of critical infrastructure with long‑term environmental and societal impact. As a senior member of Kiewit’s Marine and Coastal Resiliency (MCR) team, you will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, construction partners, and clients to deliver high‑quality, constructible designs. The role combines deep technical involvement in marine structural engineering—including berthing and mooring analysis and the design of bulkheads, docks, piers, and related waterfront structures—with project leadership, business development, and the strategic growth of the MCR practice. Location This position could be based out of our Manhattan, NY or Woodcliff Lake, NJ offices. Position may qualify for more flexible remote work based on the candidate experience. Responsibilities Serve as a senior marine structural technical resource on port, marine, waterfront, and coastal resiliency projects. Lead structural analysis and design for waterfront and marine infrastructure such as piers, wharves, bulkheads, docks, seawalls, marinas, ferry terminals, fender systems, and related coastal structures. Perform and review berthing and mooring analyses and develop design solutions for mooring systems, berthing structures, caissons, pile‑supported structures, retaining systems, and related marine infrastructure. Prepare and review structural calculations, technical reports, design packages, plans, details, and specifications for reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel, timber, foundation, and retaining structure elements as applicable. Act as project engineer or deputy design manager on select projects, supporting integrated delivery with structural, hydraulic, geotechnical, and construction disciplines. Support project teams in resolving technical and logistical challenges, including constructability issues, non‑conformities, and technical claims, and contribute to technical risk identification and mitigation during pursuits and project execution. Prepare construction documents and support construction administration activities, ensuring designs are delivered in accordance with applicable codes, standards, client specifications, and Kiewit’s design quality management program. Where appropriate and aligned with experience and licensure, serve as Engineer of Record for structural components. Collaborate closely with internal engineering teams, construction personnel, and external design partners. Mentor and support the development of junior engineering staff through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and day‑to‑day collaboration. Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment focused on quality, safety, and continuous improvement. Interface with clients, regulators, subconsultants, and project stakeholders as a senior technical representative. Business & Practice Development Support business development efforts, including pursuits, technical proposals, and client engagement. Contribute to the growth and evolution of the MCR practice through strategic initiatives, lessons learned, and continuous improvement. Explore opportunities to improve design efficiency through new tools and workflows, including AI‑enabled solutions. Quality & Safety Lead by example in promoting a strong culture of safety, quality, and accountability. Support implementation and continuous improvement of the design quality management system. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required; master’s degree in Structural, Coastal, or Geotechnical Engineering preferred. Minimum 8+ years of progressive project‑based experience in marine structural or waterfront engineering design, including design, inspection, rehabilitation, and construction support of waterfront facilities. Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in a U.S. state, with ability to obtain multiple state PE licenses in the short‑term. NCEES record a plus. Demonstrated experience performing berthing and mooring analysis and designing waterfront structures such as bulkheads, docks, piers, wharves, seawalls, and related marine infrastructure. Experience preparing design calculations, plans, specifications, technical reports, and construction or observation documentation, preferably within integrated or contractor‑led delivery models (e.g., Design‑Build, EPC, Progressive Design‑Build). Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management abilities. Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Willingness to travel periodically to other project offices and job sites and to spend time in the field supporting inspections, investigations, and construction observations. Experience as a project engineer or design coordinator on multidisciplinary port, marine, or waterfront projects. Familiarity with structural and marine engineering analysis and design software such as SAP2000, RISA 2D/3D, LPILE, GROUP, GRLWEAP, DeepEX, Slide/SLOPE/W, PLAXIS, or comparable software. Preferred: On‑site construction, field inspection, and condition assessment experience, with the ability to view design through a constructability lens. Preferred: Engagement in industry organizations such as COPRI, ICCE, or similar. Preferred: Holistic understanding of port, marine, and coastal resiliency projects, including structural, civil, geotechnical, and hydraulic interfaces. Preferred: Interest in supporting other water or infrastructure markets; French fluency considered an asset (not necessary). Preferred: Existing NCEES record a plus.
