CHL Systems is seeking a Supervisor of Machine Shop to lead daily machining operations in our CNC and manual machining department. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality production of machined components that meet engineering specifications and customer requirements. This is a working supervisor role, with approximately 80% hands-on machining and 20% leadership and coordination responsibilities. The Supervisor will actively support machining operations while leading a team of machinist and programmers to achieve production, safety, and quality goals. Why You’ll Love Working Here Competitive compensation with opportunities for advancement Comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, PTO, holidays) Family-owned company with 65+ years of manufacturing excellence Collaborative, safety-focused culture built on integrity and accountability Opportunity to lead and develop a skilled machining team What You’ll Do Machine Shop Leadership & Operations Lead daily operations of the machine shop, including CNC programming, setup, machining, and inspection of parts Operate CNC and manual machining equipment while supporting team members as needed Plan, schedule, and assign work based on production requirements, available manpower, and delivery timelines Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine machining methods, tooling and setups Production & Equipment Oversight Promote and enforce all company safety policies and procedures Conduct regular safety discussions and maintain a proactive safety culture Oversee machine setup, calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to industrial safety standards Team Development & Calibration Train, coach, and develop machinists and operators Provide performance feedback and support skill advancement across the team Promote accountability, teamwork, and professionalism within the department Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Project Management teams Support CNC programming activities using CAM software and verify/edit G-code when needed Physical Demands Ability to stand, sit, and move throughout the machines shop for extended periods Regular lifting and movement of materials up to 50 pounds Frequent use of hands, arms, and fingers to operate machinery and tools Ability to kneel, stoop, or climb when accessing equipment Ability to work in a busy manufacturing environment with noise, vibration, and machining fluids What We’re Looking For Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED required Minimum 5 years of machining experience, including CNC setup and operation Minimum 2 years of leadership experience in supervisory, lead, and team leader role Experience in precision machining and tight-tolerance manufacturing environments Experience operating both CNC and manual machining equipment Technical Skills & Knowledge Experience with CNC programming using GibbsCAM, Mastercam, or similar CAM software Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation Understanding of tooling, fixtures, feeds, speeds, and machining setup optimization Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office tools Knowledge of Lean manufacturing, 5S, and ISO 9001 quality environments Understanding of industrial safety practices including Lockout/Tagout and machine guarding Professional Skills Strong leadership and team development abilities Excellent communication and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment Strong organizational and decision-making capabilities Continuous improvement mindset with a commitment to operational excellence Manufacturing environment with CNC and manual machining equipment Exposure to machine noise, coolant mist, metal chips, and moving machinery PPE such as safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, and gloves required Frequent collaboration with engineering, quality, and production teams Fast-paced, team-oriented shop environment focused on quality and continuous improvement Occasional overtime or flexible hours may be required to meet production schedules About CHL Systems For more than 65 years, CHL Systems has been a trusted leader in designing and manufacturing custom automation and material handling solutions.
