Engineer (Civil/Structural) In‑House Design Studio Build your career while building NYC schools and impacting the learning environments of the next generation! The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions, and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects. The in‑house studio is a multidisciplinary practice that designs some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio. Responsibilities Engineer – A : Perform work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed. Provide overall coordination for in‑house design projects. Perform and/or supervise the preparation of scope, pre‑schematic, schematic, preliminary, and construction documents. Work with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel as well as outside consultants, contractors, vendors, and various government agencies. May function as a project leader and may direct Associate Engineers/Architects, Architectural/Engineering Technicians, and Technical Inspectors working on several less complex design and construction projects. Perform design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects. Monitor construction progress, conduct site observations, prepare field reports, supervise contractor submittals, and perform design review of work. May be required to sign, seal and file engineering drawings. Engineer – B : Supervise lower‑level Architects and Engineers, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists, Associate Architects and Engineers, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians. Work on more complex design projects such as large primary schools, small intermediate schools, special education schools, full modernizations, large additions, and specialized or numerous CIP projects. May act as a discipline leader in a department to train and develop internal staff, chair or participate in department seminars and workshops, and mentor lower‑level employees. Train new SCA employees and contingent staff, as well as outside design consultants, on SCA standards and procedures. Coordinate the work of consulting firms and individual consultants and perform design review of outside consultants. Perform the duties of Engineer – A when necessary. Engineer – C : Perform work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, and manage team members and/or contractors on projects. Lead multiple, complex construction projects and major design and exploration programs. Plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise stakeholders such as Engineers, Architects, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, Associate Architects, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, resolving any problems that occur. Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring compliance to codes, standards, and that the project is completed on schedule. Perform design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects, assist in preparing new design standards and procedures, coordinate consulting firms and contingent staff, and may sign, seal and file engineering drawings. May perform duties of Engineer – B and/or Engineer – A. Minimum Qualifications Level A : Baccalaureate Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university/college and a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer. Level B : Validate New York State license as a Professional Engineer; three years of full‑time paid post‑licensure experience as a Professional Engineer with at least two years as a project engineer, project team, or leader. Level C : Validate New York State license as a Professional Engineer; six years of full‑time paid post‑licensure experience as a Professional Engineer with at least three years as a project engineer, project team, squad leader, or a comparable level of responsibility. Current New York State Professional Engineer license must be maintained for the duration of employment for all levels.
