Cytotechnologist Position In Birmingham, Alabama

This Cytotechnologist position is based in Birmingham, Alabama, a dynamic and welcoming city that offers an appealing balance of urban amenities and Southern charm. Birmingham is known for its revitalized downtown districts, vibrant food scene with award-winning restaurants, and a rich civil rights history that is showcased in museums and cultural centers throughout the city. Professionals enjoy access to numerous parks, greenways, and nearby mountains for hiking and outdoor recreation, as well as local events, festivals, live music, and sports. The cost of living is relatively moderate compared to many other metropolitan areas, making it easier to enjoy comfortable housing and a balanced lifestyle. You will be working in a modern clinical environment within a city that has a strong healthcare and biomedical presence, with multiple hospitals, specialty centers, and academic affiliations. This creates an excellent backdrop for professional growth, collaboration, and exposure to a wide variety of cases. The laboratory is designed to support accurate and efficient cytology diagnostics with up-to-date equipment, established workflows, and access to advanced ancillary testing when needed. In this role, you will be responsible for screening and interpreting gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, including liquid-based cytology and fine needle aspiration samples. Your day will typically include reviewing slides at a designated workstation, documenting findings in the laboratory information system, and communicating significant or unusual results to the pathologist. You will follow standardized diagnostic criteria, maintain individual workload and quality metrics, and participate in routine quality assurance activities such as rescreening and cytology-histology correlation. Collaboration is central to the position. Cytotechnologists work closely with pathologists, histology, and other laboratory sections to ensure that patient specimens are handled correctly and that results are timely and reliable. Depending on the specific setting, you may also be involved in on-site adequacy evaluations for fine needle aspirations, providing immediate feedback to clinicians during procedures. Maintaining detailed, accurate records and compliance with regulatory standards such as CLIA and CAP will be a consistent component of your responsibilities. Shifts generally follow daytime or early evening hours aligned with laboratory operations, with workload varying based on specimen volume and clinical demands. The environment is structured yet supportive, with a focus on maintaining diagnostic excellence, continual learning, and team-based problem solving. Patient volumes and slide counts will be set according to established laboratory and regulatory guidelines, allowing you to work steadily while preserving attention to detail. Professionally, Birmingham's robust healthcare community offers opportunities to expand your cytology expertise, explore subspecialty interests, and engage in continuing education. Being part of this setting can strengthen your resume through exposure to diverse case types and a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment. The city's accessible size, strong sense of community, and growing reputation as a healthcare and innovation hub make this position attractive for both experienced Cytotechnologists and those looking to further develop their careers.
