Position: Full-Time Structural Engineer

Position Summary

Bertin Engineering, Inc. is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our growing engineering team in Glen Rock, New Jersey.

The Structural Engineer will be responsible for the analysis, design, evaluation, and preparation of construction documents for a variety of commercial, residential, industrial, and renovation projects. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing structural projects from initial field investigation and concept development through construction documents and construction administration.

We are looking for someone who can work independently, coordinate effectively with architects, contractors, owners, and other engineering disciplines, and provide practical, constructible structural solutions.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design for new construction, additions, renovations, and existing-building modifications.

• Design structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood, and foundation systems.

• Prepare structural calculations, drawings, details, specifications, and engineering reports.

• Review architectural and engineering drawings to identify structural requirements and potential conflicts.

• Perform field inspections and existing-condition assessments.

• Evaluate existing structural systems and develop repair, reinforcement, or modification recommendations.

• Prepare structural framing plans, foundation plans, sections, connection details, and construction documents.

• Coordinate structural designs with architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other disciplines.

• Review shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and contractor questions during construction.

• Provide construction-phase engineering support and perform site observations when required.

• Assist with structural investigations, feasibility studies, and due-diligence evaluations.

• Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, industry standards, and local requirements.

• Coordinate projects with clients, contractors, architects, municipalities, and other consultants.

• Manage assigned projects, schedules, deadlines, and deliverables.

• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and drafting/design staff when applicable.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.

• Minimum 5-10 years of structural engineering experience preferred.

• Experience designing commercial, residential, industrial, or mixed-use buildings.

• Strong knowledge of structural steel, concrete, masonry, wood framing, and foundation design.

• Familiarity with applicable building codes and structural design standards.

• Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, and construction drawings.

• Strong structural analysis, problem-solving, and engineering judgment.

• Ability to perform field investigations and document existing conditions.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Software Experience

Experience with the following is preferred:

• AutoCAD

• Autodesk Revit

• Structural analysis/design software such as RAM, RISA, STAAD, ETABS, SAP2000, or similar programs

• Microsoft Office

• Bluebeam Revu

Licensure

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.

• New Jersey Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred for senior-level candidates.

• Candidates working toward PE licensure are encouraged to apply.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in:

• Masonry construction

• Wood-framed construction

• Foundation design

• Building rehabilitation and repair

• Coordination with architects and contractors

• New Jersey building projects and permitting requirements

Bertin Engineering is looking for an engineer who is technically strong, practical, organized, and understands how structural engineering decisions affect actual construction.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working directly with project managers, architects, contractors, property owners, and clients and should be capable of taking ownership of assigned structural projects.
