Job Description Summary The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is a pediatric level‑one, academic trauma center. There are eight operating room suites on level 3 and two minor ORs on level 2, covering all pediatric surgical specialties including trauma, transplant, orthopedics, neuro, ENT, GU‑GYN, ophthalmology, plastics, dental, general surgery, and pediatric hearts. The nursing team consists of 75% registered nurses and 25% certified surgical technologists. Registered nurses are trained to scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The SJCH OR is a busy, dynamic, nurse‑driven, Magnet‑designated department that provides cutting‑edge technology to the children of SC. Job Summary/Purpose Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Certified Surgical Tech follows established procedural guides in the preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures. The technologist performs appropriate room duties involved with direct patient care and functions autonomously as a member of the operating room team. They demonstrate knowledge and skills required to provide care appropriate to the level of development of patients, considering the needs of patients’ families. Key Responsibilities Prepare and manage sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures. Assist with room setup, instrument flow, and patient positioning during operations. Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and other OR staff to anticipate and meet procedural needs. Provide emergency support and problem‑solving during surgical procedures. Restock supplies, assist with instrument cleaning and sterilization, and maintain a clean, safe OR environment. Work autonomously or as a team member to support surgical care and patient safety. Minimum Training and Education High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology or a military program in surgical technology. At least one year of work experience as a Certified Surgical Tech. Demonstrated competency in advanced surgical skills and critical‑thinking capabilities. Ability to apply knowledge to emergency situations and collaborate with peers. Required Licensure, Certifications, and Registrations Must hold and maintain the Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (formerly LCC‑ST). Current CPR card required: either an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card. Physical and Mental Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, and climbing stairs. Ability to work indoors and, infrequently, outdoors in temperature extremes.
