Summary At the Indian Health Service (IHS), Nurses do more than practice medicine— they change lives. Duties Assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of skilled patient care in accordance with nursing standards and evidence-based practice. Performing triage using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) system to determine patient acuity and prioritize treatment needs. Providing comprehensive emergency care to stable, unstable, and critically ill patients, including stabilization, resuscitation, and life-support interventions. Utilizing critical thinking skills to make complex clinical decisions and respond effectively to rapidly changing patient conditions. Supervising the delivery of nursing care by other professional and non-professional staff, providing guidance, evaluation, and feedback as needed. Operating and maintaining specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiogram monitors, IV pumps, oxygen flowmeters, and bladder scanners. Collaborating with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement coordinated care plans. Requirements Conditions of employment include: U.S. citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Position subject to rotating shifts; days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotations may vary from 8-, 10-, and 12-hour shifts. On-call hours or standby duty may be required. Applicants must: Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Have a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Background Investigation This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment. Applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part‑time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Basic Requirements Education : A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. Licensure : Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. They must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Foreign Nursing School Degree : Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. GS Level Requirements GS‑5 Requirements: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience; or Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience. GS‑7 Requirements: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision; Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS‑5 grade level); Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; or Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program. GS‑9 Requirements: Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; or At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS‑7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. GS‑11 Requirements: Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS‑09 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program. Minimum Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience examples: GS‑07: Performs under general supervision of an RN. Duties include assessing and caring for the nursing needs of patients; developing plans of care; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms and reacting swiftly in emergency situations; basic knowledge of triaging patients. GS‑09: Provides professional nursing care principles, practices and procedures required to assess patients; knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects, and complications; recognizing adverse signs and promptly reacting in emergency situations; providing counseling and health instruction; identifying disease entities; performing triage using the Emergency Severity Index system. GS‑11: Functions as a senior clinical expert in Emergency nursing, managing care for highly complex, high‑risk or unstable conditions; provides clinical leadership and guidance; leads unit-level quality improvement and evidence‑based practice initiatives; participates in development of clinical policies and standards; ensures high‑quality documentation and compliance with regulations. Additional Information Financial suitability requires a review of the applicant's financial history. Applicants must demonstrate financial responsibility, maintain good standing with creditors, and satisfy all legal financial obligations prior to applying. Government employees earn annual leave based on length of service; IHS may offer credit for prior non‑federal experience. Position may be covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized with at least a six‑month service agreement. Government housing is based upon availability and location. Loan repayment programs are available: IHS loan repayment program, NHSC, and HRSA Nurse Corps. Promotion potential to the GS‑11 grade level is at management's discretion and based on demonstrated ability. Promotion to higher grade levels is not guaranteed.
