Position Title: Campus Monitor
Department: School Safety

Job Definition
The Campus Monitor contributes to a safe, orderly, and welcoming school environment through active campus presence and structured monitoring of student activity in common areas and school grounds. The position provides consistent supervision of students during high-traffic and non-instructional times, including arrival, dismissal, passing periods, lunch, recess, and school events.
The role emphasizes proactive observation, relationship-building, and clear communication to promote positive student behavior and overall school climate. The Campus Monitor reinforces established school expectations and reports concerns to administrators in a timely manner.
The Campus Monitor does not supervise staff, conduct investigations, or perform law enforcement functions. All responsibilities are carried out under the direction of an administrator and in alignment with district policies and procedures.
Essential Job Functions
- Provides active supervision of students in hallways, common areas, parking lots, cafeterias, outdoor grounds, and during arrival, dismissal, passing periods, and school events.
- Maintains a positive and orderly campus environment through visible presence and consistent supervision practices.
- Observes campus activity and promptly reports safety concerns, policy violations, or behavioral issues to administrators or designee.
- Uses district-approved communication tools to maintain situational awareness, report concerns, and follow up as needed.
- Redirects student behavior through verbal guidance and de-escalation techniques consistent with district expectations.
- Supports administrators and student services staff by reinforcing established behavior and attendance expectations.
- Supervises and directs visitor movement to ensure compliance with school check-in procedures.
- Assists with structured arrival and dismissal procedures, including pedestrian and vehicle flow supervision.
- Maintains radio communication with designated school personnel during assigned supervision duties.
- Accompanies students to administrators or designated staff when directed.
- Supports implementation of school-wide student management procedures under administrator direction.
- Develops and maintains professional working relationships with students, staff, and families to foster a respectful school climate.
- Assists with supervision-related preparations for the opening and closing of the school year.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in school-based settings, including hallways, cafeterias, common areas, entry points, and outdoor campus spaces. The position requires prolonged standing and walking, frequent movement throughout campus, monitoring large groups of students, and the ability to respond quickly to developing situations. The role may involve occasional lifting or moving items consistent with supervision duties.
The employee may be exposed to elevated noise levels, high-traffic environments, varying weather conditions when supervising outdoors, and student behavioral incidents. The position requires active supervision of students to support campus safety, reinforce school expectations, and assist administrators in maintaining orderly school operations. The employee may encounter conflict situations and must respond calmly and consistently in accordance with district procedures.
Work follows the assigned school schedule and may include supervision during arrival, dismissal, lunch periods, assemblies, extracurricular activities, or other school events. The role requires sustained situational awareness, clear communication, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively with administrators and staff to promote a safe learning environment. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

- Remain composed and effective in emotionally charged or fast-moving situations
- Follow established procedures and apply direction consistently
Minimum
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience working with youth, in schools, or in other structured, public-facing environments
Preferred
- Experience in a K–12 school setting
- Training in de-escalation or behavior support strategies
- Bilingual or multilingual skills
