Retirement Plan Specialist

Position Summary The Retirement Plan Specialist is the primary contact for the day‑to‑day operation of Costco’s 401(k) Retirement Plan, the Puerto Rico Retirement Plan, and the Employee Stock Purchase Program. The role requires a deep understanding of retirement plan regulations, strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to operate within a calendar‑based cycle where priorities may shift based on business needs and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities Execute operations and administration of the various retirement plans and Employee Stock Purchase Program. Ensure compliance with government regulations by working with outside counsel and the plan recordkeeper. Handle remittance of contributions, plan document review, plan corrections, and other operational tasks as they arise. Respond to documentation requests from external auditors to facilitate annual audits. Lead the non‑discrimination testing process from initiation to completion. Maintain proactive communication with Payroll, Human Resources, and IT. Coordinate communication initiatives to promote the plans at the participant and location level, facilitating delivery timelines and collecting feedback from management. Stay current on changes in retirement plan legislation and best practices, recommending plan amendments and improvements. Handle difficult conversations with participants and resolve issues promptly. Demonstrate business knowledge and the ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. Propose process improvements that enhance departmental efficiency. Travel to conferences and off‑site meetings as required. Maintain reliable workplace attendance at the assigned location. Non‑Essential Functions Assists in other areas of the department and the company as necessary. Other Conditions Management will review the Job Analysis for this position prior to a job offer. Experience, Skills, Education & Licenses/Certifications Required: Minimum 2 years of experience managing and administering retirement plans or equivalent experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong time management and organizational skills. Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with Google applications (Slides, Docs, Sheets, Forms) and Microsoft products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with HRIS and benefits databases. Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to maintain accuracy while meeting deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated knowledge of ERISA, IRS, and DOL regulations as they relate to qualified retirement plans. Recommended: Certifications such as Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Retirement Plans Associate (RPA). Comfortable with public speaking and presentations. Demonstrated ability to achieve personal and group goals. Successful experience working with various levels of management within the company. High School Diploma or GED preferred. Ability to Operate Vehicles, Equipment or Machinery Computer, phone, printer, copier.
