Director Of Traffic Control

The Director of Traffic Control is responsible for setting up, implementing, and maintaining traffic control systems for construction and utility projects across New Mexico, Nevada, and California. This role serves as the senior traffic-control expert, ensuring all work zones meet state and local regulations while supporting safe, efficient field operations.

This individual will also play a key role in building and developing a new in-house traffic control group, helping the company expand its capabilities and capture growing opportunities, particularly in California.

Key Responsibilities

  • Traffic Control Plan Execution Interpret, set up, and maintain Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) for projects in NM, NV, and CA.
  • Multi-State Compliance Ensure all work zones comply with MUTCD, state DOT requirements, and local permitting rules.
  • Field Leadership Serve as the senior Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) on site; oversee proper placement of signs, devices, lane closures, flagging operations, and work-zone adjustments.
  • Program Development Assist leadership in building a dedicated traffic-control division, including staffing, training, equipment planning, and process development.
  • Training & Mentorship Mentor junior TCSs and field crews; help establish company-wide traffic-control standards.
  • Coordination & Communication Work closely with construction teams, permitting agencies, and subcontractors to support project schedules.
  • Equipment Management Oversee inventory, maintenance, and deployment of traffic-control devices and vehicles.
  • Opportunity Support Support expansion efforts in California by providing expertise for new projects and clients.

Qualifications

  • Certifications Valid TCS certifications for New Mexico, Nevada, and California (or ability to obtain quickly).
  • Experience 37+ years of traffic-control experience, including hands-on TCP setup and field supervision.
  • Technical Knowledge Strong understanding of MUTCD, state-specific standards, lane closures, flagging operations, and work-zone safety.
  • Leadership Ability Proven ability to lead crews, train staff, and manage field operations.
  • Travel Flexibility Willingness to travel between NM, NV, and CA as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain on feet for extended periods (812 hours) in active construction work zones
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull traffic control equipment (e.g., cones, signs, barricades, bases) weighing up to 5075 pounds regularly, and occasionally more with assistance
  • Ability to work outdoors in a wide range of environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, and direct sun exposure
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and enter/exit work vehicles frequently
  • Ability to set, adjust, and retrieve traffic control devices along roadways with live vehicular traffic
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain, including gravel, slopes, ditches, and active construction sites.
  • Ability to maintain situational awareness and react quickly to moving vehicles, equipment, and changing traffic patterns
  • Ability to work irregular hours or extended hours, night shifts, and weekend schedules, including emergency or on-call situations
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times (e.g., high-visibility clothing, hard hats, safety boots, gloves, eye/ear protection)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in high-noise environments, including use of radios and verbal signaling for traffic coordination
  • Sufficient vision (with or without correction) to read signage, interpret plans, and monitor traffic flow at varying distances
