POSITION SUMMARY

We're looking for a bold, practical, and highly operational Director of Risk Management to build and lead a modern risk management function across a rapidly growing senior living organization.

This is not a traditional insurance administration role. We need a hands-on leader who can identify risks before they become crises, turn lessons learned into meaningful organizational improvement, and drive accountability across the business while being a support function.

Success in this role requires a bias toward action, ownership, and execution. One day you may be presenting enterprise risk trends to executive leadership; the next, you may be leading an incident investigation, implementing a corrective action plan, or partnering with operators to solve a problem in real time.

This role is ideal for a builder and problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is equally comfortable developing strategy, influencing leaders, and rolling up their sleeves to get things done.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Risk Management

• Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of the organization's enterprise risk management program, addressing operational, clinical, financial, workforce, regulatory, and reputational risks.
• Establish and maintain enterprise risk reporting, dashboards, key risk indicators, and governance processes that provide leadership visibility into significant risks and mitigation efforts.
• Partner with executive leadership to incorporate risk management principles into strategic initiatives, acquisitions, transitions, and business planning.

Claims Oversight & Loss Prevention

• Build and strengthen processes supporting claims reporting, investigation, litigation management, and loss prevention in partnership with the Claims Administrator, carriers, brokers, TPAs, outside counsel, Legal, and Operations.
• Monitor claim trends, litigation outcomes, and significant loss events to identify root causes, reduce future exposure, and improve operational performance.
• Participate in claim reviews, major loss events, and settlement discussions involving significant organizational risk.

Resident Safety & Clinical Risk

• Develop and maintain systems for identifying, investigating, tracking, and responding to resident and clinical risk events.
• Partner with Operations, Quality, Compliance, and community leadership to promote resident safety, quality outcomes, and operational accountability.
• Lead investigations and root-cause analyses involving high-risk incidents and support implementation of sustainable corrective action plans.
• Identify enterprise-wide trends and recommend interventions that reduce resident harm, regulatory exposure, and litigation risk while promoting a Just Culture approach focused on accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.

Risk Governance, Policy & Operational Controls

• Design and implement risk governance frameworks, reporting structures, escalation protocols, documentation standards, and accountability measures.
• Evaluate incidents, claims, audits, licensing concerns, litigation trends, and operational data to identify opportunities for stronger controls and organizational performance.
• Partner with Legal, Compliance, Operations, Human Resources, Audit, and Learning & Development to implement practical risk mitigation strategies that support operational excellence.
• Monitor the effectiveness of policies, corrective actions, and risk mitigation initiatives and recommend improvements as needed.

Licensing, Permits & Operational Readiness

• Develop and oversee processes supporting the timely renewal and maintenance of licenses, permits, certifications, and other operational authorizations.
• Partner with Operations, Compliance, Legal, and community leadership to identify and mitigate licensing and operational readiness risks across the portfolio.
• Establish reporting and escalation processes for licensing and operational requirements that may impact resident care, business continuity, acquisitions, or transitions.

Crisis Management & Incident Response

• Build and maintain crisis management, investigation, and incident response processes that support a coordinated organizational response to critical events.
• Lead responses involving serious incidents, workplace safety events, natural disasters, regulatory investigations, and other high-risk situations.
• Facilitate post-event reviews and corrective action planning to strengthen organizational preparedness and resilience.

Risk Analytics & Reporting

• Design and maintain executive reporting, dashboards, and performance metrics that provide meaningful visibility into claims, incidents, litigation, workers' compensation activity, resident events, licensing status, and other key risk indicators.
• Utilize analytics and trend analysis to identify emerging risks, measure program effectiveness, and support business decision-making.
• Present actionable recommendations and meaningful performance insights to executive leadership.

Training, Culture & Organizational Learning

• Partner with Learning & Development and operational leaders to develop targeted training and retraining initiatives based on identified risk trends.
• Ensure lessons learned from incidents, claims, investigations, and near misses are translated into sustainable operational improvements and organizational learning.

Team Leadership & Development

• Establish clear goals, accountability measures, and performance expectations.
• Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture focused on solving problems, reducing organizational exposure, and supporting operational partners.
• Lead by example through active participation in investigations, corrective action planning, training initiatives, and risk reduction efforts while creating a culture of ownership, urgency, accountability, and execution.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Business Administration, Legal Studies, Public Health, Insurance, or a related field.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, healthcare operations, senior living, insurance, claims administration, clinical risk, patient safety, compliance, or related disciplines.
• Demonstrated experience building, implementing, or enhancing enterprise risk management programs, governance frameworks, or organizational risk initiatives.
• Experience leading incident investigations, root-cause analyses, corrective action planning, and organizational improvement initiatives.
• Strong working knowledge of liability claims, litigation management, incident reporting, insurance programs, loss prevention, and risk mitigation strategies.
• Experience analyzing claims, incident, operational, or regulatory data and translating findings into practical business actions.
• Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive accountability without direct operational authority.
• Experience partnering with executive leadership and presenting risk trends, recommendations, and business cases to senior leaders.
• Exceptional analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and project-management skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues to operational and executive audiences.
• Ability to manage sensitive, high-profile, and time-critical matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
• Willingness and ability to travel to communities and operational sites as needed.

Preferred

• Experience in senior living, healthcare, post-acute care, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, hospitality, or other multi-site operating environments.
• Experience overseeing or supporting general liability, professional liability, workers' compensation, auto liability, and other casualty claims programs.
• Experience developing enterprise risk dashboards, key risk indicators, governance committees, and executive reporting frameworks.
• Experience implementing Just Culture, High Reliability Organization (HRO), patient safety, quality improvement, or similar organizational improvement methodologies.
• Experience supporting acquisitions, transitions, integrations, licensing activities, or operational readiness initiatives.
• Professional certifications such as ARM, CRM, CPHRM, CPCU, CPPS, CHSP, or similar risk-management, healthcare, or insurance designations.
• Advanced degree in healthcare, business, risk management, or a related discipline.

Salary Description


$165,000 - $185,000 Annually
