Criminal Justice Social Worker — Reentry & Therapy Specialist

Introduction The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. Grade PSCS Social Worker I, Criminal Justice – Grade 17: $76,315 (potential growth up to $110,288). PSCS Social Worker II, Criminal Justice – Grade 18: $81,444 (potential growth up to $117,737). Location of Position Baltimore City: 954 Forrest Street, Baltimore, MD 21202 Allegany County: 14100 McMullen Hwy SW, Cumberland, MD 21502 Howard County: 7805 House of Correction Rd, Jessup, MD 20794 Position Duties The main purpose of this position is to provide a full range of social work services to incarcerated individuals housed at the assigned DPSCS facility, and to provide services to regional institutions as needed. Social Work Services: Provide clinical and case‑management services, including development of comprehensive re‑entry plans for special‑needs incarcerated individuals. Provide individual intervention for crisis or problem‑solving as assigned. Provide ongoing individual therapy as assigned and resources permit. Act as a resource and assistant in assessing PREA screening, eligibility for domestic violence group treatment, and release planning services. Conduct therapeutic/didactic groups based on cognitive‑behavioral theory for the general population. Present at clinical staff meetings when scheduled. Related Administrative Duties: Maintain and complete monthly reports, statistics, case notes and appropriate records on all services provided. Participate in institutional, regional and divisional staff meetings. Serve on special task forces and work groups as assigned by supervisor. Complete special projects or tasks as assigned. Minimum Qualifications PSCS Social Worker I, Criminal Justice Education: Determined by the State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers. Experience: None. PSCS Social Worker II, Criminal Justice Education: Determined by the State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers. Experience: Two years of experience providing clinical and therapeutic social work services applying principles, methods and procedures of professional social work to clients requiring rehabilitative counseling. Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology or Welfare fields on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Employees must be licensed as a Graduate Social Worker (on or before June 30, 2018) or a Master Social Worker (on or after July 1, 2018) to meet criteria for SWI. Employees must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker‑Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position as SWII. Applicants who do not have a license may apply pending receipt of the required license but cannot be offered a position until licensed. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the hiring department. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland. Special Requirements Employees are required to meet mandatory standards for continuing education as determined by the hiring department. Employees who fail to obtain the required continuing education credits shall be subject to disciplinary action including demotion, suspension and dismissal. Employees must complete an approved training program in group counseling techniques. Employees are required to qualify for and successfully complete the Entry Level Training Academy operated by the Police and Correctional Training Commissions.
