Job Title: Quality Technician
Job Description
The Quality Technician develops, implements, and maintains program-specific quality plans for aerospace components produced in a machine shop environment. This role serves as the primary quality point of contact for assigned customer programs, ensuring compliance with AS9100 and ISO 9001 requirements throughout the product lifecycle. The Quality Technician leads APQP and PPAP-style activities for new part introductions, conducts first article inspections, and drives corrective and preventive actions to resolve internal and customer-reported nonconformances. The position requires strong blueprint and GD&T interpretation skills, hands-on experience in a machining environment, and a continuous improvement mindset focused on reducing defects, scrap, and rework.
Responsibilities
- Develop, document, and maintain program-specific quality plans, including control plans, inspection plans, and PFMEAs for new and existing part numbers.
- Serve as the quality plan owner for assigned customers and programs, ensuring ongoing compliance to quality plans throughout the product lifecycle.
- Translate customer specifications into clear internal work instructions and inspection criteria.
- Lead APQP and PPAP-style activities for new part introductions, including planning and executing first article inspections in accordance with AS9102 requirements.
- Perform root cause analysis on internal and customer-reported nonconformances and lead the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) activities to disposition nonconforming material in accordance with company and customer requirements.
- Draft professional, customer-facing RCCA responses and quality escape notifications that clearly communicate issues and corrective actions.
- Track and report CAPA effectiveness and closure metrics to ensure timely resolution and sustained improvements.
- Serve as the primary quality point of contact for assigned customer accounts, supporting technical discussions and resolving quality concerns.
- Support customer audits, surveillance visits, and technical quality reviews by preparing documentation, presenting data, and addressing questions.
- Prepare and present quality metrics, traceability matrices, and program status reports for review by customers and internal leadership.
- Coordinate RMA and return processing, including investigation of returned products and preparation of quality notification responses.
- Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications to define appropriate inspection methods for complex airfoil and machined geometries.
- Conduct internal audits in accordance with AS9100D requirements and support audit readiness activities for assigned programs.
- Identify, lead, and support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, SPC, and process capability studies to enhance quality performance.
- Analyze scrap, rework, and defect trends, and lead reduction projects to improve yield and reduce cost of poor quality.
- Collaborate closely with production, engineering, and other cross-functional teams to ensure quality requirements are understood and consistently met.
- Maintain accurate and organized quality records, reports, and documentation to support traceability and compliance.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years of quality experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience working in a machine shop environment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
- Strong understanding and practical application of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Previous experience working with AS9100 quality management systems.
- Previous ISO 9001 experience and familiarity with related documentation and processes.
- At least 1 year of first article inspection experience, preferably in the aerospace industry.
- Hands-on experience performing first article inspections in accordance with AS9102.
- Ability to develop and maintain control plans, inspection plans, and PFMEAs.
- Experience conducting root cause analysis and leading corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Ability to interpret and apply customer specifications to internal processes and inspection criteria.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing customer-facing RCCA responses and quality notifications.
- Proficiency in using measurement tools and inspection equipment commonly found in a machine shop.
- Ability to analyze quality data, including scrap, rework, and defect trends, and derive actionable insights.
- Experience supporting or conducting internal audits to AS9100D or similar standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Aerospace industry experience is preferred.
- Previous machine shop experience beyond the minimum requirement is preferred.
- Experience with grinding machines or working in a quality engineering role supporting grinding operations is preferred.
- Familiarity with APQP and PPAP methodologies for new product introduction.
- Experience with Lean and Six Sigma tools to drive continuous improvement.
- Knowledge of SPC and process capability studies.
- Comfort working as the primary quality contact for customer accounts.
- Experience preparing traceability matrices and detailed quality status reports.

This setting is ideal for professionals who value teamwork, open communication, and the chance to contribute directly to the success of both customers and colleagues.

The position operates on a first shift schedule, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, providing a consistent daytime work routine. You will work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams on the shop floor and in office settings, using inspection tools, measurement equipment, and quality management systems aligned with AS9100 and ISO 9001 standards.
