Job Title: Substation Technician

Key Responsibilities/Duties

• Assist with construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical substations and switchyards.
• Works in various types of Substations with voltages up to 500kV.
• Assist with below grade and above grade conduit / raceway installation.
• Assist with below grade and above grade grounding installation.
• Assist with assembly & installation of Steel Structures.
• Assist with installation of aluminum bus and strain bus.
• Assist with installation and maintenance of high voltage circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage transformers, potential transformers, capacitor banks.
• Installation of secondary wiring, control enclosure work and relay panel installations.
• Applicants with experience in foundation installation are preferred.
• Receives training both in book/classroom skills and on the job skills. Must continue to pass ongoing training to proceed to higher skill/job levels.
• Follows all safety guidelines as part of training.
• Works around hazardous equipment.
• Works around excessive noise from machines, jackhammers and other equipment, with proper hearing protection.
• Works at varying heights above ground, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces with proper Personal Protective Equipment.
• Work various job locations throughout the week.
• Participate in job safety analysis, behavioral based safety observations, and all other Safety, Health and Environmental Processes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• 3 or more years of prior industrial/substation electrical experience is preferred
• Chauffer’s license is required. CDL is preferred. Able to effectively pull a trailer.
• Ability to read and interpret blue prints and schematic drawings
• Preferred skills: welding, heavy equipment operating.
• Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
• Must understand basic operations of electrical utility transmission & distribution systems.
• Must understand electrical hazards associated with transmission and distribution voltage substation construction.
• Must understand safe work practices and safe work clearances and can identify potential hazards for all employees.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Must be able to acquire a TWIC certification

Education and Experience

• High school diploma, GE, HiSET or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3 years of related experience

Certifications and Licenses

A valid Driver's license is required and must be maintained throughout employment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Ability to work skillfully with both hands constantly, independently, safely lift and carry objects up to 5 feet long and weighing up to 20 pounds routinely, 50 pounds occasionally, climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffold, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, twist, finger, grasp and feel on a constant and repetitive basis, stand, walk, talk, see (20/20 vision naturally or corrected), hear within normal range and perform repetitive motion activities.
• Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions including excessive heat and cold, noise, vibrations, dust, fumes, oils, wear a portable respirator.
• Ability to physically negotiate the hazards of a new construction worksite (i.e. uneven surfaces, floor openings, heights, construction debris and poor lighting).
• Some positions in this classification may be on 24-hour call out for emergency situations.
