As we continue to evolve, we’re seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Building Inspector to join our team. Reporting to the Building Official, the Building Inspector is responsible for ensuring all construction throughout the city follows the procedures outlined within local city ordinances. This includes permitting, inspections of new construction projects, additions, repairs and alterations, answering process and procedure questions for obtaining permits, scheduling inspections, and maintaining a good working relationship with developers, builders and design professionals, etc. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellent public service. FUNCTIONS/DUTIES (include, but not limited to): Perform residential and commercial inspections throughout all phases of construction, including site work, footings, foundations, framing, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Verify that construction projects comply with approved plans, City ordinances and specifications, applicable building codes, and other regulatory requirements. Conduct inspections related to new occupancies and changes in occupancy; document deficiencies and communicate required corrective actions to contractors, property owners, and other responsible parties. Prepare accurate inspection reports, photographs, case files, correspondence, and other required records. Identify unlicensed or unpermitted construction activity and ensure required business licenses and permits are obtained before work resumes. Read and interpret complex construction documents, blueprints, specifications, and site plans. Review submitted plans for compliance with locally adopted building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire, occupancy, and related codes; issue review comments to architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners. Review proposed roads, drainage systems, utilities, and other infrastructure intended for City ownership or maintenance, and coordinate commercial projects with the Chelsea Fire Department. Investigate nuisance-abatement and zoning complaints; inspect properties, gather evidence, issue required notices, post properties, maintain case records, and monitor corrective actions. Coordinate nuisance-abatement cases and cleanup efforts with the Building Official, City Council, City departments, and private contractors; maintain regular and punctual attendance and perform other related duties as assigned. Comply with all federal, state, and municipal laws while performing duties. Perform all other related duties as assigned and required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a graduate from an accredited high school or hold a certificate of high school equivalency (GED). Three (3) to five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience or more of increasingly responsible experience in building code inspection, code enforcement or construction industries. Possession of, or the ability to obtain, International Code Council (ICC) certifications in building inspection and/or plans examination within one (1) year of hire. Must possess adequate computer skills with knowledge of common office software and willingness to learn special software related to the position. Must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress. Must be willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops. Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability throughout employment. Must be willing to work non-standard hours and overtime, as required. Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, employment, education and certification verification, and drug testing. HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work are typicallyMonday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. SALARY: The salary range for this position is $50,048 to $80,313 annually.
