Location: Boone, North Carolina | Full-time | Non-Exempt

As a Phlebotomist at UNC Health Appalachian, you'll play an essential role in patient diagnosis and care, collecting blood specimens with skill and compassion from neonates through adults, at the bedside and in outpatient settings. You'll be a trusted, reassuring presence for patients of every age.

Compensation: Starting at $17.46/hour, based on education and experience

Schedule: Full-time; 4:00am - 10:00am

What You'll Do as a Phlebotomist

• Collect venous and/or capillary blood specimens from neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients, both at the bedside and in the outpatient area
• Apply working knowledge of the circulatory system, venipuncture technique, and medical terminology to ensure safe, accurate collections
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, colleagues, physicians, leadership, and volunteers
• Respond quickly and accurately to emergencies and changes in patient condition
• Support top-tier outcomes for patient experience, quality, and safety
• Approach work with a bias for action, efficiency, and personal accountability, modeling UNC Health Appalachian's Mission, Vision, and Values
• Foster professional, productive working relationships that promote a healthy work environment

Qualifications/Licenses

• Education: High school graduate, with formal training or on-the-job training sufficient to qualify for certification as a Phlebotomist
• Experience: Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program, or documented on-the-job training with a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire
• Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience as a phlebotomist; Phlebotomist certification through an accredited testing agency or national certification

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work within the chain of command using positive verbal and non-verbal techniques
• Competence in processing specimens safely and effectively within the limits of certification and hospital policy
• Exceptional customer service for patients, families, staff, and physicians
• Proficiency with laboratory computer programs; ability to type at least 25 WPM

Physical & Work Environment

• Continuous standing and walking, often 8+ hours per shift
• Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, turning, and reaching
• Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls 50+ lbs
• Manual dexterity and mobility required; frequent hand, finger, and wrist repetition
• Near visual acuity and close eye work; speaking, reading, and writing for extended periods
• Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, reagents, and laboratory specimens
• Exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment
• Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies
