Position Summary The Student Media Staff supports JCCC's mission by managing multi‑platform storytelling and promotion of The Messenger , the college's official student news website. Members work in a collaborative newsroom structure, specializing in roles such as social media management, investigative reporting, photography, or digital design while gaining cross‑functional experience with professional media tools and AP style standards. Potential Roles (express interest in one or more) Social media production editor – responsible for content creation, branding, news content and social media management on all platforms excluding YouTube. Social media news reporter – relay campus news on social media through vertical video and text. Copy editor – oversee proofreading and AP style adherence of all written content, including articles, videos and podcast previews. Senior photographer – capture still and video images of news and sports on campus. Senior designer and illustrator – create illustrations, infographics, and other visual explainers, and design print products including flyers and the semi‑annual magazine. Video/audio editor – edit raw videos and podcasts using non‑linear editing software. News reporter – cover campus news, life, and sports through features, previews, and other creative topics. PR/Marketing – plan events, tabling, build partnerships, and influence social media content. Podcast producer – develop concepts for multiple weekly podcast shows and recruit guests. Responsibilities Cover news, life, and sports through features and creative topics. Capture still and video images for news and sports coverage. Develop podcast content, including guest recruitment and campus networking. Report campus news via vertical video and writing for social platforms. Create illustrations, infographics, and visual explainers. Design magazine layouts and perform non‑linear audio and video editing for YouTube and podcasts. Brand and compose content specifically for social media platforms. Proofread and ensure AP style adherence for all written content. Manage content across all social media platforms and meet publication deadlines. Plan events and tabling sessions to increase visibility. Build collaborations with other campus organizations. Align social media content with PR goals and promote the publication. Participate in regular staff meetings, learn media tools, and complete story assignments as directed. Perform other duties as assigned, with discretion of management. Required Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent, enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at JCCC each semester, and maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Demonstrated writing and editing skills (writing test may be administered during interview). Knowledge of media types (print, video, social media, etc.). Some experience with relevant production software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, RSS feeds, etc. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience on a student publication. Completion or current enrollment in at least six (6) hours of college‑level English, design, or journalism courses. Benefits Tuition discount for JCCC courses. More flexibility on scheduling.
