A Residential Detox Counselor II provides personal care assistance, counseling and education to chemically dependent, acutely inebriated and/or persons experiencing co‑occurring disorders who are undergoing withdrawal or in early stages of recovery in a 24‑hour social detoxification facility. An employee in this class conducts intake activities, determines eligibility for the detox program and provides therapeutic and case‑management services. In cooperation with the Detox Team Leader and Detox Clinical Supervisor, the Residential Detox Counselor coordinates treatment plans with clinical staff, works with law enforcement departments, health care agencies and other referral sources to receive, retain and recommend additional programs and services. Provides group and individual counseling employing best‑practice models of treatment. Prepares topics and facilitates groups related to education on substance abuse, recovery, health, life skills and other related topics. The treatment focuses on engagement, encouraging consumer acknowledgment of addiction, promoting behavior modification, discussing current problems, treatment options, social and occupational planning. The Counselor serves as a primary counselor as well as shift team leader. Independent judgment is required in making decisions concerning admissions, interventions and referrals with individuals who may have a dual diagnosis of mental health and substance abuse. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Detox Team Supervisor. Examples of Duties Conducts intake screening interviews and assesses the appropriateness of potential consumers for treatment. Provides information and referral. Orients consumers to the program. Administers medications. Monitors the vital signs and assesses consumer’s physical condition during withdrawal. Obtains basic consumer information, medical history and all signed waivers and releases. Protects consumer confidentiality as required by State and Federal Privacy Laws. Serves as primary counselor for assigned consumers and as leader for a shift. Maintains case notes on consumer progress including significant or non‑compliant behavior and motivation level regarding treatment. Enters accurate and timely information into the consumer’s medical record in compliance with all licensing, CARF and other standards. Prepares incident reports. Observes consumer participation in a casual setting, such as group sessions, and at A.A. meetings to evaluate mental and physical status and progress. Confers with the Detox Center Supervisor, other Detox Counselors, Clinical Supervisor and consultants to provide input on consumer status and progress. Leads discussion groups and community meetings as well as providing group instruction on substance abuse and related topics. Participates in the development, revision and implementation of individualized treatment plans and discharge/aftercare plans. Inspects rooms for contraband and other unauthorized items. Ensures that consumers complete assignments and follow program rules. Reports equipment malfunctions and maintenance needs to Supervisor. Administers first aid and notifies police, medical or psychiatric services in an emergency. Arranges and provides transportation to medical facilities and other consumer‑related appointments. Links consumers to community resources. Identifies consumers for involuntary discharge following procedures and implements an appropriate behavioral modification plan. Discusses discharge and aftercare with consumer and professional staff. Collects, deposits and secures all consumer personal belongings. Attends all staff meetings and training sessions as required. Assists in the orientation of new staff and volunteers. Answers telephones at the Detox Center as required. Maintains all required City, State and Departmental certifications or licenses. Performs other duties as assigned, including assisting consumers in achieving personal hygiene. Minimum & Additional Requirements One year experience in a substance abuse treatment unit or mental health clinic providing individual and group counseling and/or case‑management coordination services; and completion of college level courses in behavioral health, substance abuse and/or mental health diagnosis and treatment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Employees must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of their residence. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual (English‑Spanish, French, African or Middle Eastern language) skills.
