Critical Care Paramedic
UC Health is hiring a Full time, night shift (7a-7p) Critical Care Paramedic for our Mobile Care team!
The role of a Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) for Air Care & Mobile Care (ACMC) builds upon the skills and knowledge base of the advanced life support (ALS) transport Paramedic and acquires a broad and complex field of knowledge and skill that will commensurate with that of a CCP as recognized by the International Board of Specialty Certification (IBSC). Under the supervision of the Medical Director and in collaboration with a Critical Care RN the CCP will provide safe, quality patient care specific to all age groups served. The CCP will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the appropriate level of patient care according to the applicable state(s) scope of paramedic practice as well as organizational and departmental policies and procedures. In addition, the ACMC CCP is expected to maintain all performance standards of a CCP as outlined by the relevant IBSC and the Commission on Accreditation for Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS).

Responsibilities
Patient Population - (Clinical Only):
- Engages in population appropriate communication.
- Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
- Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
- Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
- Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
- Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
- Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
- Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Clinical Practitioner:
- Provides appropriate medical care for a wide spectrum of patients ranging from stable to critically ill or injured. Possess advanced knowledge and critical decision-making skills in order to assess and implement a holistic approach of care that addresses the physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and their family. Evaluates the care that is provided and responds appropriately.
- Completes and demonstrates proficiently of all required department and organizational competencies and educational requirements according to the position of a Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) for ACMC. Initial and ongoing education to address providing competent care to some of the most complex patients needing to be transported to a higher level of care i.e patients requiring cardiac assist device, ventilators with advanced settings, require blood or blood products, intravenous thromboloytics, intensive care unit medications and pressors (list not all inclusive).
- Ability to perform advanced level life-saving skills as determined by patient condition including the following but not limited to: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management including emergency airway management, ventilator management with advanced settings, cardiac defibrillation, excessive bleeding control, trauma management including spine stabilization, splinting of limbs, Cervical spine immobilization rapid extrication procedures, chest tube monitoring and management, 12 lead EKG set up, performance and interpretation.
- Ability to perform basic level point of care lab testing as ordered or by protocol.
- Ability to obtain and interpret vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and end tidal CO 2 monitoring).
- Medication management within scope of practice.
- Maintenance of blood administration.
- Transport patients with a central /peripheral IV/IO without an infusion, IV maintenance and fluid administration, central line monitoring, IV pump management.
- Assist with the transport of patients on cardiac assist devices (Intra-aortic balloon pump, ECMO, LVAD, Impella).
- Emergency birth management
- In the event of emergency declaration, Paramedic may provide immunizations and medication administration under physician approval and proper training.
- Quality Management: Actively participates in improving organizational performance. Evaluates the effectiveness of established processes and procedures and makes recommendations for change as needed to improve upon the quality of patient care and their outcomes. Attends clinical chart reviews on a regular basis- total number to be agreed upon with immediate supervisor
- Maintains accurate records:
- Completes patient documentation and all transport records thoroughly, timely and per department policy.
- Completes required operational paperwork thoroughly and ensures proper functioning of medical equipment and vehicles; reports any deficiencies or concerns in a timely manner.
- Takes initiative to obtain information related to, and be actively involved in department operations by, but not limited to: attending meetings, reviewing meetings minutes, reading department generated e-mails, newsletters and other formats of communication and doing so in a timely manner or as defined by policy.
- Leads change, models teamwork and demonstrates collaboration that is supportive of highly effective and cohesive teams. Demonstrates active involvement in at least one department committee(s).
- Serves as a mentor and orients new employees of diverse disciplines.
- Reports to any satellite or staging base(s) for work assignments as needed for operational efficiency.
- Hand off of Care: Gives report and communicates patient updates timely and professionally and defends the patient's right to privacy and confidentiality during all communication.
- Understands his/her role in overall hospital and department strategy, mission and vision and translates that into clear action plans and goals with measurable results to be reviewed and agreed upon with immediate supervisor.
- Completes special assignments and other duties as assigned and does so in a timely manner.
Safety:
- Ensures that work areas are organized, clean and present a safe, effective and efficient environment for self, patients and other colleagues.
- Conducts daily operations in a safe manner.
- Demonstrates knowledge of safe emergency vehicle operations/emergency egress operations and other state and federal rules and regulations.
- Responds to transports and other requests in a safe and timely manner.
- Secures and handles equipment safely and with appropriate restraining devices.
- Reports any safety concerns in a timely manner and uses the appropriate process for doing so.
- Responsible for the safety and securing of UC Health vehicles at any location.
Professional Growth:
- Remains current and active in the field of critical care and in the advanced transport medical industry.
- Has a concept of self development; recognizes the need for professional growth and takes the appropriate steps toward meeting educational needs.
- Seeks on-going professional development through participation in patient care conferences and/or research industry (giving presentations at conferences encouraged) organizations and committees. Achieves continuing education above minimal requirements for licensure/certification renewals.
- Identifies and assumes responsibility for learning needs by completing a minimum of two clinical rotations or clinical experiences in critical care settings per performance appraisal year.
- Remains knowledgeable in and implements new industry standards in order to strive for optimized outcomes.
- Contributes to the growth of peers by sharing own knowledge, experience and skills.
- Educates healthcare professionals and other customers regarding critical care medicine and the advanced transport medicine industry and the ACMC program. Serves as a role model and mentors others- includes orienting new associates as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED.
- Paramedic Certification for the State of Ohio required.
- Paramedic National Registry preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required upon hire.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within initial probationary period.
- Transport Provider Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) or its equivalency(s)- to be obtained within initial probationary period.
