HVAC Technician I
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the university's HVAC and Central Plant systems. Works under the direction of the Lead HVAC/Controls Technician to carry out both corrective and preventive maintenance tasks, ensuring efficient and reliable system performance.
Lubricate and clean mechanical parts, as well as change air filters on equipment. Participate in repair and maintenance of HVAC, refrigeration, and related mechanical equipment with difficult or special problems. Perform water test, analyze and treat hot, chilled, and condenser water systems. Maintain equipment logs. Keep Lead HVAC/Controls Technician informed of equipment status, communicate with Facilities Management personnel, faculty, staff, and contractors and attend trainings, seminars, and other meetings as needed. Perform after hour, holiday, and weekend repairs on a rotating on call schedule and as needed in the event of emergencies. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of HVAC systems maintenance, including related electrical and pneumatic controls. Basic knowledge of math, algebra, and geometry. Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to gain knowledge of university policies and procedures. Knowledge of environmental requirements related to building maintenance. Demonstrate initiative and perform quality work in a busy, multi-task environment. Basic knowledge of chemistry and physics as related to plant issues. Ability to operate computer keyboard. Ability to troubleshoot equipment to component level. Ability to read and understand complex manuals and diagrams. Must be able to adjust to changing priorities. Ability to operate maintenance vehicles, industrial hand and power tools, welder, personnel lifts, fork lift, computers, sheet metal fabrication, equipment, software, fax, copier, and calculators.
High school diploma or GED certification required. Three years HVAC Technician type I or higher experience. Refrigeration EFA approved certification is required. Technical school training in HVAC or related systems preferred. Must have a valid Texas driver's license and have a driving record acceptable to the University's insurance company.
