Associate Research Scientist

The Department of Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accepting applications for an Associate Research Scientist in the Division of Surgical Sciences. The focus of the research projects will be cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration and mitochondrial dysfunction relevant to basic and translational study.

Responsibilities:

• Performing laboratory research in the area of neurodegeneration and mitochondrial function relevant to amyloid pathology and mitochondrial degeneration.
• Evaluating the effect of small molecule compounds or targeted gene changes on amyloid pathology and mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, synaptic pathology, mouse behavior and stereo brain injection and cell culture and images.
• Functionally characterizing candidate genes that influence mitochondrial and synaptic function, amyloid pathology in transgenic animal models.
• Initiating and conducting individual and interdisciplinary research in neuronal function.
• Analyzing and summarizing research data sets utilizing statistical methods.
• Presenting research results and preparing manuscripts for peer review and publication in professional journals. Participating in the development of an extramurally funded research program by assisting PIs with NIH grants by developing and generating data and figures.
• Active participation in the academic and research missions of the University and the Department of Surgery.
• Training and development of junior lab members.
• Additional responsibilities include participation in the academic and research missions of the University, the Department of Surgery.
