Health Technician

The Health Technician supports the daily operation of the school health office and assists in meeting the health and safety needs of students. Under the direction of the Building Administrator and the supervision/delegation of the District Registered Nurse, the Health Technician provides basic first aid, assists with student health plans and chronic health needs, administers medications as trained and delegated, maintains accurate health records, supports required health screenings, and communicates appropriately with staff, families, and health professionals. This position requires professionalism, confidentiality, sound judgment, and the ability to respond calmly and appropriately to student health needs in a school setting.

Position Information:

Position: Health Technician

Work Year: 150-day school calendar

Work Schedule: 8 hours per day / 4-day school week

Reports To: Building Administrator and District Registered Nurse

Assignment Location: Assignment location will be determined by the District. The position may be assigned to a specific school building or may serve as a floating district Health Technician based on student health needs, staffing needs, coverage needs, and district priorities.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience or training in a health care, medical, school health, child care, or related setting preferred.

Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain prior to beginning duties.

Medication Administration certification/training, or ability to successfully complete required training and competency verification.

Ability to perform medication administration and delegated health tasks only as trained, authorized, and delegated by the District Registered Nurse.

Successful completion of all required criminal background checks and fingerprinting.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive student health information appropriately.

Ability to work cooperatively with students, families, staff, nurses, administrators, and outside providers.

Basic computer skills and the ability to enter, maintain, and retrieve accurate student health data.

Ability to follow district policies, health office procedures, written protocols, emergency care plans, individual health plans, and applicable state and federal requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide daily health office support and assist students with illness, injury, medication needs, and other health-related concerns during the school day.

Serve at the assigned school building or across multiple district sites, as needed, to support student health services and coverage needs.

Provide basic first aid, CPR, and emergency response within the scope of training and district procedures.

Administer medications only in accordance with district policy, provider orders, parent/guardian authorization, and supervision/delegation by the District Registered Nurse.

Document all medication administration accurately, including missed doses, refusals, medication errors, or concerns, and report concerns promptly to the District Registered Nurse.

Enter, update, and maintain accurate student health records, health office visit logs, medication records, screening records, immunization documentation, and other required health data.

Track health services provided to students for monitoring, reporting, compliance, and evaluation of school health needs.

Comply with all applicable professional standards, certification requirements, training requirements, district procedures, and state and federal requirements related to school health services.

Work closely with school staff, faculty, administrators, and the District Registered Nurse to support student health, safety, and access to learning.

Assist the District Registered Nurse with the implementation of individual health plans, emergency care plans, and health-related accommodations for students with chronic or complex health needs.

Assist with chronic health needs of students, including but not limited to diabetes, asthma, seizures, allergies, or other medical needs, within the scope of training, written protocols, and RN delegation.

Coordinate and assist with required and age-appropriate health screenings, including vision, hearing, lice screenings, and other screenings as assigned by the District Registered Nurse.

Assist with communicable disease prevention and response, including conducting lice screenings, health observations, parent/guardian communication, and referral to the District Registered Nurse as needed.

Notify the District Registered Nurse, Building Administrator, parent/guardian, or emergency services when student health concerns require additional attention or emergency response.

Maintain confidentiality of student health records and health information in accordance with FERPA, applicable HIPAA requirements, district policy, and professional standards.

Communicate health-related information to appropriate school staff on a need-to-know basis while protecting student privacy.

Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by Colorado law and district policy.

Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and properly supplied health office environment.

Monitor health office supplies and notify the appropriate staff member when supplies need to be ordered or replaced.

Follow infection control, universal precautions, and communicable disease procedures.

Provide office support when needed, which may include answering phones, greeting visitors, assisting students, supporting attendance processes, or other reasonable duties assigned.

Participate in required district trainings, health services trainings, emergency response trainings, and professional development as assigned.

Comply with all district policies, school procedures, confidentiality requirements, safety expectations, and applicable state and federal laws.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of basic first aid, CPR, medication administration procedures, and school health office practices.

Ability to recognize when a student health concern requires referral to the District Registered Nurse, Building Administrator, parent/guardian, or emergency medical services.

Ability to remain calm and make appropriate decisions during urgent or emergency situations.

Ability to follow written protocols, provider orders, health plans, and RN direction.

Ability to maintain accurate records and complete documentation in a timely manner.

Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, staff, and supervisors.

Ability to maintain professional boundaries and protect confidential information.

Ability to organize tasks, prioritize student needs, and manage interruptions in a busy school environment.

Ability to work independently while knowing when to seek direction or assistance.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work is performed primarily in a school health office and school building environment. The position may require standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, assisting students, and responding quickly to student health needs or emergencies. The employee may be exposed to illness, bodily fluids, communicable conditions, cleaning products, medications, and other health-related materials. The employee must be able to use appropriate safety procedures, universal precautions, and personal protective equipment when required.
