Substance Abuse Counselor

Position Summary The Recovery Village – Salem is hiring Substance Abuse Counselors who are passionate about supporting individuals on their journey to recovery. Schedules Preferred candidates are available to work Sunday–Thursday. Sun–Thurs: 8:30AM – 4:30PM Tues–Sat: 8:30AM – 4:30PM Current Openings Full‑time and PRN opportunities available (on‑site role). QMHA Group Facilitator – Starting $28+/hour. Willing to obtain a CADC or is currently dually credentialed. CADC I, II, or III Substance Abuse Counselor – Starting $26+/hour. Role Description The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for performing patient care activities as directed by the Clinical Director. Primary duties include group therapy, creating evidence‑based group curriculum, participating in treatment plans, coordinating discharge planning, and collaborating with the Treatment Team.

CORE JOB DUTIES

Develop and provide daily group therapy to assigned patients following the substance abuse and co‑occurring program curriculum. Assist in ensuring group attendance/compliance by providing engaging and meaningful content. Use therapeutic interventions and de‑escalation techniques to assist patients in accomplishing treatment goals and successfully completing treatment. Assess patients for substance use disorders, risk to self or others, and co‑occurring mental health disorders. Provide support for aftercare planning in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. Demonstrate sufficient comprehension of Substance Use Disorders and Co‑Occurring Mental Health Disorders. Identify areas for improvement within the department by studying data and developing, implementing, and documenting plans for improvement and outcomes.

OTHER REQUIRED TASKS

Maintain positive relationships with all staff. Participate in multidisciplinary treatment plan reviews. Maintain healthy boundaries with patients and staff. Ask for and accept feedback from supervisors. Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for all staff and patients. Communicate significant patient developments to supervisor. Participate in Quality Improvement activities and contribute to the success of the organization. Pursue professional development through education and training programs. Contribute positively to the morale of other staff members. Complete all required documentation as needed, ensuring compliance with all company policies and procedures, state regulations, Joint Commission standards, and Medical Needs Criteria. Documentation includes:

• Comprehensive Problem List
• Integrated Master Treatment Plan and Updates
• Group therapy session notes
• Discharge Summary

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Behavioral Health Field preferred. High School Diploma required.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION DESIRED

State SUD certification required if education is equivalent to High School or Bachelor’s level. CADC I, II, or III. QMHA or QMHP and willing to obtain a CADC. CPR‑AED and First Aid certification required.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum one year of work experience in behavioral health field preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING REQUIRED

Proficiency in communication & written skills. Knowledge of State & Federal statutes regarding patient confidentiality laws. Knowledge of licensing and accreditation standards. Understanding of addiction placement, continuing care, and discharge criteria, including American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria.
