Instructional Assistant/Aide

Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups; monitor and report student progress. Instructional Assistant/Aide incumbents assist a certified teacher by performing a variety of support functions in a regular classroom setting. Instructional Assistants/Aides incumbents work within a complex program typically requiring additional skills and characterized by increased independence of action.

Representative duties include:

• Tutoring individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by a teacher; maintaining records of student progress.
• Participating as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
• Preparing and organizing lessons as directed by the teacher; administering and scoring a variety of tests according to established guidelines; assisting in determining English proficiency of identified students.
• Assisting in administering diagnostic and other tests; scoring and recording test information.
• Monitoring and reporting behavior of students according to approved procedures; reporting progress regarding student performance and behavior; checking and assisting students with lab work necessary.
• Performing routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; operating copy machines; maintaining classroom records; maintaining attendance records.
• Providing support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
• Assisting in overseeing students while in labs; providing for supplies inventory as necessary.
• Assisting students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
• Conferring, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
• Contacting parents of students who are absent; making home visits as necessary.
• Assurance of the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations.
• Directing group activities of students as assigned; assisting in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assisting in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips.
• Participating in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
• Performing related duties as assigned.

Education and experience: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and some experience in working with children in an organized setting. Obtain an official college transcript from an accredited college with 64 college hours or pass the Kentucky Para-educators Exam.
