Healthy Neighborhoods Specialist

Position Overview:

The Healthy Neighborhoods Specialist works closely with Healthy Neighborhoods Director of Special Initiatives to execute all facets of the Citywide Curbside Appeal Program. The Specialist will play a critical support role in the implementation of curbside improvement projects across 10 neighborhoods blocks in Philadelphia. The Specialist will work across PHS departments, with external contractors, and with block captains and residents to install trees, rain barrels, planters, and more. The Specialist will support the record keeping and project management required to track a high volume of projects. They will also communicate with residents on progress and any expected disruptions to their street. This role will also support other special projects taken on by the Special Initiatives team.

Primary Responsibilities:

Resident Engagement & Communications

• Maintain communications with the block captains and residents on 10 blocks selected to participate in the Citywide Curbside Appeal Program.
• Manage the shared email inbox that residents will use to ask questions.
• Visit blocks during and after installation to ensure high-quality installs and answer any questions.
• Help organize and facilitate one annual neighborhood celebration event and several “Spring Refresh” events.

Project Management

• Using Monday.com as a project management tool, manage the status of each installation project across the 10 blocks.
• Create consolidated reports to share weekly with PHS management, Department of Housing and Community Development, and other City Agencies.

Project Implementation

• Support assessments of each block to determine eligibility for certain projects.
• Create work scopes and contractor assignments based on both the installations that residents request, and the results of the home assessments.
• Partner with internal teams to support cross-functional initiatives by organizing meetings, documenting action items, identifying project risks, and helping ensure projects are completed on time and aligned with organizational priorities.
• Evaluate program and project outcomes, maintain accurate records, and recommend process improvements to increase operational effectiveness and participant engagement.

Other Special Projects

• Work with Director of Special Initiatives to support other special projects and strategic initiatives by developing project plans, tracking timelines, monitoring deliverables, coordinating stakeholders, and providing regular status updates to leadership.

Qualifications / Specifications:

• Experience with Community Engagement and/or working with Philadelphia block captains
• Project management experience
• Clean Driving Record and Driver’s license
• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience
• Organization skills, attention to details and ability to handle multiple priorities in a timely and reliable manner
• Strong social, rapport-building and oral communication skills
• Experience working with contractors
• Commitment to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and constituencies across platforms (email, phone, in person, text, etc)
• Strong problem-solving skills to quickly address challenges as they arise
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Monday.com or equivalent)
• Ability to work outside under various weather conditions and occasionally work on some weekends and weeknights
• Must have working phone number and email address

Physical Demands:

This is largely a sedentary role that requires looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time; however, some physical demands are required.

Standard Hours (including travel, evening, and weekend hours): PHS’s standard office hours are 9 AM to 5 PM at team member’s designated workspace. Some teams and positions work alternate hours because of the nature of their role at PHS. Your Business Unit’s Working Norms document will identify alternative hours, if applicable.

Flower Show Requirements: Hours preparing for the show and the duration of the show may not follow your regular work schedule. Your Flower Show schedule will depend upon your regular position or your temporary position supporting the Flower Show. You may be required to stand for long periods of time, do extensive walking, and lift up to 25 pounds.
