As part of Salas O'Brien, we work to attract and retain the best talent because the best talent delivers the best results for our clients.

Job Summary:

As a part-time Technical Editor/ Writer, you will provide technical editing and writing assistance to the W93 Modernization Program, a critical national security effort to design and acquire a modern sea-launched ballistic missile warhead for the US Navy. You will edit, organize, and maintain the integrity of complex technical, engineering, and national security documentation, including critical program-level deliverables and milestones for the program. This is a part-time, 20 - 24 hours a week, on-site role working in the DOE John Gordon building, located in Albuquerque, NM.

Responsibilities:

  • Document Editing & Writing: Format, edit, copyedit, and proofread complex technical reports, system engineering documents, milestone reports, interface control documents, and progress reports. Ensure clarity, flow, logical structuring, and consistent tone across documents authored by multiple scientists, engineers, and program managers.
  • Level 2 Milestone Support: Work closely with the W93 Program Management Office (PMO) and technical leads to monitor, plan, and deliver crucial documentation supporting Level 2 milestones and ensure deliverables meet exact federal and program formatting, stylistic, and structural directives.
  • NNSA Lifecycle Documentation: Edit and coordinate documentation associated with the nuclear weapon acquisition lifecycle (transitioning through Phase 3/4/5/6, including Design Definition, and Development Engineering).
  • Standards & Quality Control: Ensure strict compliance with program-specific design manuals, military characteristics (MCs), stockpile-to-target sequences (STSs), and organization-specific style guides.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with program team, engineers, and stakeholders to review technical metrics into accurate program deliverables.
  • Information Security Adherence: Ensure that all written materials are appropriately marked and handled in accordance with strict DOE/NNSA classification guidelines (e.g., Restricted Data, Formerly Restricted Data, and Sigma categories).

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering, or other highly related field.
  • 5 or more years of work experience as a technical writer, editor, or document control specialist.

  • A keen eye for editing multi-author compiling challenges, correcting passive language, verifying mathematical notations, and enforcing style consistency.

  • Manage time-sensitive deadlines simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Expert-level mastery of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe Acrobat Pro, and advanced collaborative authoring systems (e.g., SharePoint, PTC Windchill, or similar PLM software).
  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills.
  • US citizenship, as a security clearance will be required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Active Q or Top Secret security clearance.
  • Master's degree.
  • Direct experience supporting NNSA Defense Programs, nuclear weapon laboratories (LANL, LLNL, SNL), or enterprise production plants (Pantex, Y-12, KCNSC).
  • Knowledge of the Defense Programs Lifecycle Process (specifically Phase 6.X or Phase X acquisition frameworks).
  • Familiarity with weapons-related classification markings and the handling of Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information (UCNI) or Weapon Data (Sigma).
  • Experience translating programmatic schedule updates (e.g., Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) into structured, narrative milestone reports.
