Sterile Processing Technician

Job Summary:


The Surgical Services Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) is responsible for the decontamination, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment to ensure a safe and sterile environment for surgical procedures. The technician supports surgical teams by maintaining instrument integrity, adhering to infection control standards, and managing inventory. This role requires a minimum of 2 years of experience and relevant certifications to maintain high standards of patient safety and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities:

  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment following established protocols.
  • Inspect instruments for functionality and integrity before and after sterilization.
  • Assemble surgical instrument trays according to procedure specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization processes and inventory management.
  • Collaborate with surgical staff to ensure timely and efficient instrument availability.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines to prevent contamination.
  • May float to the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) surgery center as needed.
Required Skills & Certifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in sterile processing or related surgical services.
  • National Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control standards.
  • Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:

  • Experience working in a hospital setting with a large bed capacity.
  • Familiarity with electronic charting systems such as Epic.
Special Considerations:

  • No on-call requirement.
  • May be required to float to a sister facility ASC surgery center.
  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted at application and is subject to approval based on facility needs.
  • Facility may call off one shift every two weeks.
  • Scrub colors: Navy for RNs; OR scrubs are provided for Sterile Processing Technicians.
Scheduling:

  • Shift assignments and schedules are determined by facility needs and staffing requirements.
  • Guaranteed hours may be adjusted with potential call-offs as per facility policy.
