JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction of the HIM Director (HIMD), the HIM Supervisor will assist the HIMD with operational planning, workflow processes, and internal controls. In the absence of the HIMD, the HIM Supervisor will oversee the HIM department as needed.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in related field, or experience equivalent
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in supervisory role in HIM
• RHIT or RHIA certification, or experience equivalent, with coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC required
• Knowledge of billing and coding for Rural Health Clinics, Critical Access Hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities
• Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR), encoders, and any other applicable software

• Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.

GENERAL SKILLS:

• Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Strong written and verbal skills.
• Basic Computer Skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• General environment: Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned area, with moderate noise levels.
• May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
• May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids, or infectious organisms.
• May be required to change from one task to another or different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
• Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
• May be scheduled as needed including overtime.

• Have near normal hearing: Hear alarms/telephone/normal speaking voice.
• Have near normal vision: Clarity of vision (both near and far), ability to distinguish colors.

• Continuously within shift (67-100%): Standing, Walking. Frequently within shift (34-66%): Bending/Stooping, Pushing/Pulling, Lift/carry up to 20lbs, Lift/carry greater than 20 lbs. with assistance.
• Occasionally within shift (1-33%): Sitting, Climbing, Twist at waist, Lift/Carry greater than 50 lbs. with assistance, Reaching above shoulder.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

• Develops orientation and training programs and ensures ongoing competence of staff is documented.
• Serves as a member of various committees and participates in hospital staff meetings as required.
• Identifies problems affecting coding, abstracting, billing, and legal issues related to the release of medical information and assists in their resolution.
• Conducts studies, analyzes reports, and makes recommendations concerning staffing, organization, budget, and work flow.
• Supervises the maintenance of medical records and the preparation of statistical reports for research and hospital administration.
• Assists with privacy investigations as needed.
• Audit releases of information and scanning into the EHR as needed.
• Communicates appropriately and clearly to the director, coworkers.
• Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and to administrative staff of other departments.
• Is a resource person both within the department and to administrative staff of other departments.
• Demonstrates the ability to be flexible and organized.
• Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
