Educational Assistance Courses are designed in compliance with Title 5 state regulations to address students' educational and functional limitations related to their verified disability. The APE Instructor teaches aquatic exercise, cardiovascular fitness, and resistance training courses for students with disabilities.The Kinesiology Department at Gavilan College is dedicated to promoting lifelong wellness, physical literacy, and inclusive access to movement education. In joining Gavilan College, the ideal candidate thrives as a faculty member continually striving to employ anti-racist, anti-ableist pedagogy and develop successful strategies to inspire and retain historically underserved students.Essential DutiesTeach 14-16 lecture-equivalent hours per semester, which will include in-person instruction at the Hollister and Gilroy campuses as well as online teaching; may include evening and weekends. May also include teaching Dual Enrollment (high school) and/or Higher Aspirations (justice impacted) program courses, as needed.Create inclusive, student-centered learning environments that support the growth and success of diverse learners through thoughtful course preparation, effective teaching methodologies, and meaningful feedback.Cultivate relationships with students to support their growth through office hours and regular interaction (both in person and online).Create, assess, and update curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.Actively engage in department and division meetings, events, and initiatives.Contribute to campus committees and decision-making processes that support the college's mission and goals.Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.Adhere to department, division, and district policies and procedures for faculty employees.Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning stylesDevelop effective online course materials and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications, Education, and ExperienceMinimum Qualifications:Master's in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education ORBachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy ORThe equivalent AND 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted physical education.Demonstrated ability to develop and employ culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or from historically underrepresented groupsForeign Degree Holders: Please see the Additional Application Process Information section below for important information regarding the evaluation of your foreign degrees.Preferred Qualifications and Attributes:Knowledge of the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS).Experience working with people with disabilities in an exercise/physical education environment (e.g. weight training, flexibility, movement techniques, adapted aquatic exercise and aerobics).Familiarity with state and federal laws (e.g., IDEA, ADA, Section 504) related to adapted physical education.Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to motivate students through positive reinforcement, maintain healthy team morale, and instill the principles of discipline and good sportsmanship.Demonstrated ability to attract a culturally diverse student population from widely divergent geographic and socio-economic communities.High-level organizational skills, and ability to maintain accurate records and follow college processes.Knowledge of the unique policies and methodologies of the California community college athletic experienceKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to adapt and modify activities, equipment, and environments to ensure accessibility.Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human differences.Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.Ability to conduct classes in a virtual learning environment using Canvas or other methods of remote learning.Physical Characteristics:Sitting, standing to supervise contests, performing coaching activities and administration; walking; climbing, bending, stooping to access supplies; hand/finger movement sufficient to type, operate and handle equipment; and lifting up to 75 pounds. Must be able to carry equipment for long distances and time durations.
