FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more. How you will make an impact The incumbent of this position is supervised by the Deaf Department Principal; the Assistant Principal of Instruction provides leadership for teaching and learning within the Deaf High School. This role focuses on supervising instructional personnel, ensuring high-quality standards-based instruction, and implementing systems that support student achievement, intervention, and IEP fidelity. This position works collaboratively with the Assistant Principal of Student Services to ensure a cohesive approach to student success, safety, and well-being. The Assistant Principal of Instruction maintains a strong presence in classrooms, supports teachers through coaching and feedback, and leads initiatives related to curriculum, instruction, and school improvement. Instructional Leadership and Staff Supervision Provide direct supervision and evaluation of teachers, associate teachers, instructional assistants, and staff assistant. Monitor instructional practices through regular classroom walkthroughs and formal observations aligned to school expectations and the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices. Provide timely, actionable feedback that supports continuous improvement in instruction. Lead and support instructional staff in delivering standards-based instruction aligned to curriculum and school priorities. Facilitate coaching cycles in collaboration with curriculum specialists, ensuring instructional personnel receive targeted support based on student data and classroom observations. Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth. Ensure consistent implementation of lesson design, instructional delivery, and progress monitoring practices that support diverse learners who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Maintain high visibility in classrooms to reinforce expectations and provide direct support. Instructional Systems, Intervention, and IEP Implementation Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of instructional systems and teacher IEP responsibilities/roles that support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), including Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 instruction and interventions. Collaborate with instructional and student services teams to ensure interventions are evidence-based and aligned with student academic and language needs. Support teachers in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), ensuring accommodations, modifications, and services are delivered with fidelity. Participate in IEP and admissions meetings as appropriate to support instructional planning and student placement. Use student performance data, progress monitoring tools, and classroom evidence to guide instructional decisions and improve student outcomes. Ensure alignment between curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices to minimize achievement gaps and promote academic success for all students. Oversee afterschool tutoring program for DHS students. Professional Learning and Department Leadership Plan, develop, and deliver professional development focused on effective instructional strategies, intervention practices, classroom management, differentiated instruction, and engagement for Deaf learners. Ensure professional learning aligns with school goals, accreditation standards, and staff needs. Lead and facilitate content area and department meetings to promote collaboration, data analysis, and instructional alignment. Support the development of teacher leaders and encourage shared leadership within departments. Participate in and contribute to Academic Leadership Team and ASL Leadership Team meetings. Collaborate with school leadership to advance instructional priorities and ensure consistency across programs. Schoolwide Initiatives and PBIS Leadership Lead the implementation and monitoring of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework in collaboration with the Assistant Principal of Student Services. Ensure alignment between instructional practices and behavior expectations to support a positive learning environment. Support teachers in implementing proactive classroom management strategies and behavior supports that align with Tier 1, 2, and 3 systems. Use data to monitor trends in student behavior and adjust practices as needed. Promote a structured, consistent, and supportive classroom environment that maximizes instructional time and student engagement. Accreditation, Compliance, and Collaboration Collect, maintain, and organize documentation and artifacts related to grades, lesson plans, instruction, intervention, FLDOE required instruction, and professional learning to adhere to compliance expectations as well as to support accreditation processes, including CEASD and Cognia. Ensure instructional practices align with FLDOE expectations, accreditation standards and school improvement goals. Collaborate closely with the Assistant Principal of Student Services to ensure alignment between academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support. Participate in admissions meetings and assist with instructional planning for incoming students. Engage with families, staff, and stakeholders to support student achievement and maintain open communication. Model professionalism, ethical leadership, and high expectations for all members of the school community. Attend training sessions and implement acquired skills during professional development activities as required by Federal, state, and FSDB mandates. Stay updated on best practices, educational trends, and relevant policies. Performs other duties as assigned in support of FSDB’s mission and the success of students and staff. The duties outlined reflect the primary responsibilities of the position; however, they are not all-inclusive. Related or similar duties may also be assigned as necessary. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of standards-based instruction, curriculum development, and instructional best practices for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Knowledge of MTSS, IEP implementation, and data-driven instruction. Strong instructional leadership skills, including observation, feedback, and coaching. Ability to analyze data and use results to inform instructional decisions and continuous improvement. Effective communication and collaboration skills to support staff, students, and families. Ability to lead professional development and foster a culture of continuous learning. Commitment to equity, access, and high expectations for all students. Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24. Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI). Qualifications Master’s degree or higher in education or a related field Current state of Florida educator certification in deaf or hard of hearing K-12, or ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time upon hire. Current state of Florida educator certification in educational leadership K-12, school principal K-12, or administration and supervision, or ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time upon hire. If certification(s) noted are not from Florida, upon appointment, shall obtain state of Florida certification(s) within a reasonable period of time. Minimum five years of teaching experience with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership or coaching Advanced or required proficiency in sign language within established FSDB expectations Additional requirements mandated by state/federal law and position responsibilities. Sign Language Requirements Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain an Advanced proficiency in sign language within four years of hire. Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills. Hiring Salary Range 12 month position: $72,241.94 - $79,741.94 annually. (paid biweekly over 26-pays) This range is inclusive of verified experience and education. *Base $72,241.94 Master’s degree (required) addl $4500.00 Additional Related and verified Full-time Experience (20-year max) addl $150.00 per year Hours Monday – Friday; 7:30am to 4:00pm Vision FSDB will prepare each student for a lifetime of success.
