Mechanical Engineer - HVAC/Plumbing - Data Centers Date: Jul 1, 2026 Location: Rancho Cordova, CA, US; Walnut Creek, CA, US; Los Angeles, CA, US Company: Black & Veatch Family of Companies Opportunity In this role, you will lead engineering and design of HVAC and plumbing systems for data centers. Responsibilities Design and construction activities, including project delivery methods such as traditional Design-Bid-Build and Alternative Conceptual-Bid-Build Design HVAC and plumbing systems for primarily HyperScale and colocation data center designs associated with administrative and support spaces Support additional areas such as Administrative, Warehouse, Maintenance, Workshop, Laboratory, Chemical Storage & Handling, Electrical Distribution Center, Low & Medium Voltage Switchgear, Pump Areas, Engine Generator, Blowers/Air Compressors, and Flammable & Combustible Liquids Storage Conduct Data Center airflow CFD modeling for interior and exterior spaces Conduct energy audit / efficiency studies, code review / application, and sustainable design / LEED application of sustainable strategies Develop engineering skills while working on challenging projects Team The Mechanical Buildings Design Group provides HVAC and plumbing solutions across our markets. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Previous experience in Data Center / Mission Critical Design Experience with construction support Understanding of design differences in Hyper-scale, edge and colocation data centers Familiarity with Data Center tier rating systems Strong knowledge in Autodesk Revit Data Center airflow CFD modeling experience for internal and external evaluations Computer-generated HVAC cooling and heating load calculations and HVAC equipment sizing HVAC system energy modeling and energy code knowledge Green building initiatives such as LEED Technical submittal reviewing process and bid reviewing process for large-scale water and air cooled chiller plants International Codes Council (ICC) Suite of Codes, ASHRAE Handbooks / Standards, ASPE design handbooks, and SMACNA Standards NFPA Standards Attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities simultaneously Cadence Reality Data Center Design (Formerly 6Sigma Room) Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited program in the applicant’s home country or the country of practice, or equivalent experience in engineering work Minimum five years related work experience Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background checks, drug screening, and motor vehicle records search in compliance with applicable laws Active engineering registration or licensure to support Engineer of Record requirements for BV projects where applicable Certifications Active engineering registration or licensure to support Engineer of Record requirements for BV projects in applicable countries. Work Environment and Schedule Typical office environment; prolonged periods of sitting and computer use; ability to maintain focus and attention to detail throughout the day Physical tasks during site visits may include crouching, grasping, and standing/walking for extended periods of time Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, performance, and assignments Salary Plan REG: Registered Engineering Job Grade 016 Annual Compensation $126,423.00 – $249,522.00 Benefits Benefits include 401(k) match, paid vacation and holidays, sick time, dental and vision insurance, disability coverage, and a wellness program.
