Description

Position Purpose:

The Emergency Department Technician/Ambulance Driver supports patient care operations within the Emergency Department and assists with ambulance operations, including driving responsibilities and participation in the call rotation. This role functions as a member of the emergency response team and supports high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care across both hospital and pre-tertiary hospital settings.

The position is responsible for assisting clinical staff in the Emergency Department, preparing patients and equipment, supporting ambulance readiness, and responding to ambulance transfers and emergency calls as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Nebraska driver's license with good driving record
  • Must be 25 years of age or older
  • One year driving experience
  • Familiar with traffic regulations and location of city streets
  • Ability to drive at night
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Current EMT certification preferred

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Emergency Department Responsibilities
  • Assist nursing staff with direct and indirect patient care activities within scope of training
  • Obtain and document vital signs
  • Assist with patient transport, transfers, and positioning
  • Prepare treatment rooms and maintain cleanliness and stocking of supplies
  • Assist during emergency situations and trauma responses
  • Clean and disinfect equipment according to infection prevention standards
  • Support patient throughput and department flow
  • Provides assistance to nursing staff as directed.
  • Takes vital signs and records as necessary.
  • Measures and records intake and output on patients when ordered to do so; including emesis, hemovac, suction canisters, T-tubes, voided urine and foley cath outputs.
  • Collects specimens in proper containers with proper labels, as directed.
  • Provides personal care for patients as necessary, including oral care, bathing, combing hair, etc).
  • Changes linens on patient's beds.
  • Gets patients out of bed and helps them to chair/wheelchair as needed.
  • Ambulates patients as ordered, with walker or gait belt, if necessary.
  • Ambulance Responsibilities
  • Serve as ambulance driver for emergency and non-emergency transports
  • Participate in scheduled ambulance call rotation
  • Respond to after-hours call-ins within established response time expectations
  • Assist EMS staff within scope of certification/training
  • Complete vehicle readiness checks and ensure ambulance cleanliness and stocking
  • Report vehicle maintenance or equipment concerns promptly
  • Assist with stretcher operations and loading/unloading patients
  • Call Responsibilities
  • Participate equitably in the ambulance call schedule
  • Remain fit for duty and available during assigned call periods
  • Respond promptly during scheduled call coverage
  • Coordinate with FCH team regarding schedule availability and changes
  • Maintain compliance with all hospital policies related to call coverage

Follows HIPAA regulations and ensures that the confidentiality of patients medical, personal, financial records, employee records, and organizational records is maintained.

Participates in FCH committees, quality assurance, performance and quality improvement initiatives, and activities which support the facility and department operations.

Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of FCH operations and requirements of the FCH Compliance Program. Including but not limited to:

  • The Compliance Policy.
  • Completes all mandatory on-line training annually and as assigned.
  • All department and organization-wide policies.
  • Considers the impact of regulations such as Critical Access Hospital requirements, along with Federal and State of Nebraska regulations and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance.

Presents self in a professional manner and enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
