CVOR - Certified Surgical Technologist - First Assist

Provides intraoperative assistance to the surgeon as a First Assist in cardiovascular or other surgical procedures, under supervision of the surgeon and CST leadership.

Supports tissue handling, suction, retraction, hemostasis, and instrument management to facilitate efficient and safe operations.

Responsibilities

• Assists with exposure, dissection, and tissue handling during procedures
• Performs suction, hemostasis, and wound closure under direct supervision
• Maintains sterile field and manages instruments and specimen labeling
• Coordinates with circulators and anesthesia to optimize patient safety
• Assists with eventual wound closure and dressing changes per protocol
• Documents intraoperative events and contributes to post-operative handoff
• Maintains equipment readiness and participates in sterile processing as required

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program with First Assist training or certification

Certification as a CST with additional First Assist credentials; state requirements may apply

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) with First Assist credential
• CPR/BLS

Experience in real-time intraoperative support and instrument handling; ability to work in a fast-paced OR

Experience

• Prior OR experience as a CST or first assistant
• Experience in cardiovascular surgery is advantageous

Preferred

• Cardiovascular OR experience
• Ability to work long cases and maintain composure under pressure

Work Environment

Operating room setting with direct surgeon supervision; emphasis on sterility, patient safety, and team communication.

Shift-based schedule with potential on-call requirements; documentation and instrument tracking are routine.
