Manager-HVAC Operations

Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager‑HVAC Operations. The Manager will supervise all activities of the HVAC shops including direct supervision of 2 foremen and up to 24 mechanics and helpers. The role is responsible for code compliance of all HVAC equipment, overseeing the operation, maintenance and reliability of all heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems across the hospital campus, managing contractors and HVAC consultants, responding to emergencies, performing shutdowns, startups and testing of chillers and fire standpipe systems, and commissioning new and existing HVAC/controls systems. The manager ensures safe, compliant and efficient HVAC performance to support patient care and regulatory requirements. Job Responsibilities Demonstrate knowledge of the organization’s Service Standards and incorporate them into duties. Assist in planning and development of staff to address current problems and anticipated issues; participate in departmental work planning and goal setting for short‑term tasks and long‑term projects such as capital improvement. Assist with continuous operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, handle emergency problems, breakdowns, and unanticipated events affecting patient, staff, or visitor life safety. In conjunction with the Director of Energy, Operation Managers and Project Managers, manage in‑house HVAC projects. Assist Director of Operations to maintain a high‑quality staffing level of the shop and prepare shop budgets. Supervise work of HVAC and Building Automation shop employees and establish staff schedules, including overtime, vacation, sick time and coverage. Oversee daily operation, preventive maintenance and repair of hospital HVAC systems (air handlers, fan coils, air compressors, steam stations, exhaust fans). Work with foremen and mechanics to order materials needed for maintenance. Coordinate equipment shutdowns with space occupants and Infection Prevention and Control for maintenance. Support construction projects by coordinating HVAC tracing, shutdowns and capital recharges. Respond to HVAC emergencies and system failures, providing after‑hours and on‑call support. Monitor system performance and energy usage; identify opportunities for optimization and cost savings. Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement. Conduct performance evaluations and support ongoing technical training and certification. Ensure compliance with healthcare and life safety standards, including: Joint Commission (TJC) ASHRAE standards (incl. healthcare ventilation requirements) NFPA codes Local, state and federal regulations Maintain accurate documentation for inspections, audits and regulatory surveys. Ensure compliance with all medical center policies and procedures including payroll and regulatory training. Assist with capital planning, equipment replacement and HVAC system upgrades. Manage HVAC maintenance budgets, parts inventory and vendor contracts. Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to schedule and record work performed. Manage staff in accordance with collective bargaining agreements. Perform other duties as assigned. Additional Position Specific Responsibilities Record keeping. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and related experience including 4‑6 years in industrial/commercial HVAC systems, piping, fluid flow, electronic/pneumatic control systems, HVAC and Building Automation commissioning. Knowledge and 2 years of union trade supervisory experience is desired. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building automation systems, energy conservation programs, utility distribution and supervision in a union shop environment. Ability to function in stressful situations and respond to emergency conditions. Effective communication skills at all levels of the organization. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education and hospital need.
