Phlebotomist

Job Summary The Phlebotomist performs venipuncture procedures to obtain blood specimens and sends or delivers the specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner. The phlebotomist will be expected to draw blood from babies, children, adolescents, adults, and elderly patients on a daily basis. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent Completion of a certified phlebotomy course (strongly preferred) Demonstrated phlebotomy experience Interpersonal skills to successfully interact with all co‑workers, staff, patients, patient families, and vendors. Good phlebotomy, computer, and communication skills. General Essential Functions Demonstrate knowledge of physiology and function of the venous system of the human body, and collection techniques used to draw blood from patients. Collect blood samples from patients per laboratory policy and procedure. Knowledge of human growth and development appropriate to the ages of patients served: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient. Practice proper patient identification. Label blood vials according to established procedures including use of automated patient identification systems. Transport all specimen samples to the laboratory. Utilize the computer system for data entry and monitoring of workflow. Centrifuge blood specimens per laboratory department specifications. Maintain phlebotomy supplies in cart, tray and storeroom in an organized manner. Follow safety and infection control processes and procedures. Participate in new employee and student training as assigned. Support and carry out hospital initiatives and goals and initiatives of the Laboratory. Participate in meetings, training, in‑services and other educational activities. Present a positive, service‑oriented focus to all customers. Exhibit and adhere to ICARE Standards of behavior in all areas of job duties and responsibilities. Take ownership of mistakes and notify Laboratory management when they occur. Abide by all policies and procedures affecting Laboratory staff i.e. attendance, parking, etc. Perform tasks as assigned by Phlebotomy Coordinator or Phlebotomy Lead.
