Early Childhood Unified Teacher Job ID: 5735159 Location: TBD Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Title: Early Childhood Teacher The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and more than 60 languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated high school in the nation and #1 high school in Kansas according to the US News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas. The student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. The district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers. Job Goal To facilitate student comprehension and application of concepts, skills and behaviors that contribute to the development of mature, able and responsible members of society. To ensure continuous improvement in state and national performance levels to prepare students for college and careers in a global society, and to keep performance on-track and on-time for success. Essential Functions Implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum. Work a full duty day in the location or locations assigned. Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, student outcomes, and Head Start Performance Standards. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction/learning strategies and activities compatible with the physical facility and the needs and capabilities of students. Manage classroom behavior and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the site. Continuously communicate with students and parents (in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress, or lack of progress. Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. Actively collaborate with other program personnel to plan effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum. Participate in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, in‑service and staff development activities as required or assigned. Assist in documenting student progress by maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports. Ensure that the classroom and instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning. Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal. Participate as a regular teacher in IEP meetings for IDEA students. Have strong knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of the instructional specialty to which assigned. Have a solid understanding of student growth and development applicable to the grade level. Possess knowledge of the early childhood program of studies related to mission, goals, and organization. Continuously study and apply current research and theory. Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, peers, serving as a family advocate and participating in home visits. Be skilled and effective in oral and written communication. Demonstrate excellent human relations skills. Have the physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about in a fast‑paced, high‑intensity environment. Move around the room to effectively monitor student work and behavior. Possess patience, caring, and the desire to help students and parents ensure each student succeeds. Take attendance and maintain attendance registers according to Board policy. Know and follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments. Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor at all times. Maintain a neat and professional appearance. Perform other duties as assigned. Communication / Organization Maintain communication with school personnel, parents, and guardians to enhance cooperative action that meets the educational needs of students. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Reasoning Ability Solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Language Skills Read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public. Physical Demands Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, and talk or hear.
