Director of Community Engagement

Volunteering Untapped Chicago is looking for a new Director of Community Engagement! Please note this is an unpaid volunteer position with a 2-year term. The term officially starts January 1, 2027, with a mandatory onboarding period prior. Our Director of Community Engagement is in charge of a variety items: organizing the monthly social following our Saturday events, working with the Nonprofit Partnerships Committee to find venues for Saturday volunteer events, coordinating and planning our annual gala, overseeing quarterly fundraising and social events throughout the year, as well as overseeing VU's involvement with recreational leagues and other social initiatives. We are looking for an organized, effective communicator, who is willing to bring new ideas to the table and collaborate with the rest of the board to further evolve the organization. The Director of Community Engagement will take on the below tasks, which takes on average 2-3 hours per week, outside of board meetings, which are a 1-2 hour commitment that falls in the evening outside of normal business hours. Role Responsibilities: Oversee Community Engagement Committee, which includes social partnership coordinators. Organize social events and community engagement events. Create new connections with venues (restaurants, bars, event spaces, etc.) we haven't worked with before while also maintaining solid relationships with those we've collaborated with in the past. Plan and coordinate annual gala. Participate and assist with monthly volunteering events, JEDI Events, quarterly leadership team meetings, and social events. Participate in yearly Board retreat and biweekly Board meetings. This is typically a 1 hour commitment every other week during the evening. Communicate via Slack with all VU Chicago board and committee members, as an open forum and method of organization Leadership Team Responsibilities: Attend a minimum of 10 monthly events a year. Attend bi-weekly board meetings (held virtually, in the evening) Communicate via Slack with all VU Chicago board and committee members, as an open forum and method of organization. Participate in quarterly in-person Leadership team meetings. This is typically a 2-3 hour commitment 4 times a year outside of normal business hours (~6pm start time). Arrive at monthly events early and stay late to assist with set up and clean up of events. Participate in yearly leadership retreat, monthly volunteering events, quarterly fundraisers, and social events Assist with other board member duties, when extra help is needed. Qualities of an Ideal Candidate: Strong event planning skills. Comfortable with reaching out to vendors, venues, etc. Extremely organized and detail oriented. Able to think on their feet and adjust quickly. - Creative and willing to explore new ideas. Demonstrated commitment to learning and leading with a continuous examination of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Has a passion for volunteering and relentless belief that a community of volunteers can contribute to a more just and equitable Chicago. Volunteering Untapped Chicago
