Custodial Worker

Under general supervision, performs routine custodial duties during assigned day or night shift to maintain buildings, office space, and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure condition; operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment; perform other job-related duties as assigned and/or as required.

Under supervision, the individuals in this class work independently or as part of a team to perform routine and repetitive custodial tasks and have at least one year of experience in general building and grounds maintenance. Receives general supervision from higher-level management or supervisory staff.

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform routine custodial duties during an assigned shift to maintain buildings, office space, and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.
• Sweep, scrub, and mop floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; strip, wax, and refinish floors; shampoo and spot clean carpets.
• Dust and polish furniture, light fixtures, and woodwork; empty and clean waste receptacles; clean and adjust shades or blinds.
• Clean, scrub, and disinfect restrooms; wash windows and interior and exterior walls; polish metal work, clean sinks, mirrors, and other bathroom fixtures; restock paper supplies and soap as necessary.
• Pick up paper, trash, and remove debris around grounds and in buildings; sweep and clean walkways and entrances.
• Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up facilities for special events and meetings.
• Make minor, non-technical repairs as needed, such as replacing light bulbs and lighting tubes; plunging toilets and sinks, and changing fuses as related to custodial equipment; identify and report maintenance problems.
• Wash windows, glass partitions and walls.
• Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment, including a floor stripper, buffer, vacuum cleaner, and small power and hand tools; replace bags on vacuum cleaners as necessary.
• Ensure security of facilities during assigned hours; lock gates, doors, and windows; monitor facilities for vandalism and safety and fire hazards and report to appropriate personnel; raise and lower flags, lock and unlock gates and doors; set security systems as needed.
• Perform emergency cleanup services resulting from breakage, vandalism, spills, illness, and injury.
• Assist with coordinating service repairs with outside providers and vendors; assist in receiving and distributing supplies and equipment.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned and/or as required.

Work rotating and nontraditional shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended or irregular hours based on operational requirements.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: The equivalent of six months of full-time, paid experience in custodial work, preferably in commercial, industrial, governmental, or similar organizations. Education: Verification of a High School diploma, a GED certificate, or a higher degree. Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements: Verification of a valid California Driver's License Insurability by the City's liability insurance carrier may be required

All appointments to this position are subject to the successful completion of an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Rialto Police Department as well as a physical examination including a drug screening. The background investigation is a rigorous process. A typical background investigation includes but is not limited to: background interviews with individuals designated by the Rialto Police Department (this may include current and former co-workers, friends, relatives, neighbors, or any other relevant individual), criminal background check, credit check, polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation. According to the Rialto City Employees Association (RCEA) Memorandum of Understanding, in addition to the monthly salary, the City offers:

CAFETERIA PLAN The City's Contribution to the Cafeteria Plan to go towards the employee's contributions for health, vision, and dental insurance premiums will be one thousand nine hundred and fifty dollars ($1,950) per month. Employees hired on or after 11/14/2018 shall be provided one thousand nine hundred and fifty dollars ($1,950) per month, but there shall be no cash back to the employee for any amount not used. Opt out for new hire employees (on or after 11/14/2018) shall be limited to a $200 per month for not electing City medical insurance.

LIFE INSURANCE provides a $75,000 double indemnity policy for employee plus dependent coverage ($10,000 for spouse and $5,000 dependent children).

MERIT RAISES may be received in the form of salary increases seven times within or in six years with the attainment of satisfactory work performance.

BILINGUAL PAY is paid at the rate of $100 per period for employees who successfully pass the bilingual proficiency examination for Spanish.

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE An employee who has completed the probationary period and has attained college degrees will receive an increase to their pay as follows: Bachelor's Degree: Five percent (5%) of base salary Master's Degree: Seven point five percent (7.5%) of base salary Please note, these educational incentives are not cumulative.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT Employees can receive up to $2,500 per fiscal year.

VACATION is earned at the biweekly rate of six (6) hours for the first through fourth years.

SICK LEAVE is accumulated at the rate of 4.62 hours per period (120 hours per year) with no maximum amount of accumulation.

SPORTS CENTER Employees, employees' spouses, retirees, and retirees' spouses shall be allowed free use of the Rialto Fitness Center during normal operating hours as long as the City has managerial control of the facility. Employees, employees' spouses, retirees, and retirees' spouses shall adhere to the same regulations regarding reservations and the use and care of the facilities as the general public.
