We are looking for an experienced Senior Credit Underwriter to support the underwriting of the Bank’s larger, more complex, and higher-priority commercial credit opportunities. This role will be a key partner to the Commercial Banking team, providing deep credit expertise and taking ownership of complex transactions from initial assessment through recommendation and approval. A key objective is to accelerate the commercial credit pipeline through timely, high-quality underwriting and early identification and resolution of issues that could delay decisioning or closing. The Senior Credit Underwriter will perform comprehensive financial and credit analysis, recommend appropriate deal structures, identify and mitigate credit risks, and prepare well-supported credit recommendations in accordance with the Bank’s Commercial Credit Policy, risk appetite, and applicable regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate has significant commercial banking and underwriting experience, strong independent credit judgment, and the ability to analyze and structure large and complex middle-market and commercial transactions in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment. What You’ll Do Complex Commercial Underwriting & Credit Analysis Lead the underwriting of large, complex, and high-priority commercial credit transactions, including new relationships, renewals, modifications, and increases. Conduct comprehensive credit analysis to assess borrower creditworthiness, repayment capacity, and transaction risk. Analyze historical and projected financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, leverage, liquidity, debt service capacity, collateral, guarantor support, and other relevant information. Perform advanced analysis, including cash flow modeling, financial ratios, sensitivity analysis, global cash flow analysis, and stress testing, as applicable. Evaluate industry conditions, management capabilities, ownership structure, economic factors, and other qualitative risks. Identify key transaction risks and recommend appropriate mitigants, including collateral, guarantees, covenants, reporting requirements, and other credit protections. Recommend appropriate loan structures based on financing purpose, repayment source, borrower profile, collateral, and overall risk. Prepare clear, concise, and well-supported credit approval memoranda and recommendations for Credit Committee or other approval authorities. Ensure underwriting packages are complete, accurate, decision-ready, and delivered within established SLAs. Serve as a senior credit resource for complex and priority transactions, helping move qualified opportunities efficiently from initial assessment through credit decisioning. Partner closely with Commercial Banking, Relationship Management, Credit, Operations, Legal, Compliance, and other stakeholders to facilitate timely execution. Engage early in complex opportunities to identify credit concerns, information gaps, or structural issues before they become obstacles to approval or closing. Proactively manage underwriting priorities based on transaction complexity, client needs, pipeline priorities, and service-level expectations. Provide timely feedback regarding transaction viability, required documentation, potential structures, and material credit considerations. Help reduce unnecessary credit cycle time while maintaining disciplined underwriting and the Bank’s credit standards. Credit Decisioning & Structuring Present and defend credit recommendations before Credit Committee and other approval authorities, as applicable. Recommend approval, counteroffer, modification, or denial of credit requests based on comprehensive borrower and transaction analysis. Exercise independent credit judgment and constructively challenge assumptions, projections, structures, and mitigants when appropriate. Ensure transactions comply with the Bank’s Commercial Credit Policy, risk appetite, concentration limits, underwriting standards, and regulatory requirements. Provide guidance on deal structure, repayment sources, collateral, guarantees, covenants, and other credit considerations. Support the continued enhancement of underwriting standards, credit processes, templates, and best practices. Portfolio & Credit Risk Support Perform periodic credit reviews and renewal underwriting for assigned complex commercial relationships. Identify emerging risks, deteriorating financial performance, covenant concerns, repayment issues, and other early warning indicators. Recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies when material changes in credit quality are identified. Support analysis of criticized or higher-risk relationships, including restructuring recommendations when necessary. Collaborate with Credit Risk, Enterprise Risk Management, Compliance, Operations, and other stakeholders to support sound credit risk governance. Maintain accurate and complete credit documentation in accordance with Bank policy and regulatory expectations. Maintain current knowledge of commercial credit trends, regulatory expectations, economic conditions, and industry best practices. Process Improvement & Leadership Identify opportunities to improve underwriting efficiency, standardize analysis, and shorten decisioning timelines without compromising credit quality. Serve as a subject-matter resource for complex commercial underwriting and provide guidance to less-experienced team members when appropriate. Promote strong collaboration between Credit and Commercial Banking. Contribute to a culture of ownership, urgency, sound judgment, and disciplined execution. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus. Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in commercial credit underwriting, commercial lending, credit analysis, or credit risk management within a banking or financial institution. Demonstrated experience underwriting large and complex commercial and middle-market transactions. Strong understanding of commercial loan structures, repayment analysis, collateral, guarantees, covenants, and credit documentation. Advanced ability to analyze financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, projections, leverage, liquidity, and debt service capacity. Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex transactions and formulate well-supported credit recommendations. Experience preparing and presenting transactions to Credit Committee and/or senior credit approval authorities. Strong understanding of commercial credit policies, risk ratings, regulatory classifications, and banking regulatory expectations. Ability to manage multiple complex transactions simultaneously while meeting demanding credit and commercial timelines. Strong analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and credit judgment skills. Strong sense of ownership and ability to proactively drive transactions toward resolution. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish. High attention to detail with the ability to focus on material risks and issues. Results-driven, highly organized, intellectually curious, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Candidate must be based in Puerto Rico. Preferred Qualifications Formal advanced commercial credit training or completion of a recognized bank credit training program. Professional certifications or advanced coursework in credit, finance, accounting, or risk management. Significant experience underwriting middle-market and larger commercial relationships. Experience with commercial real estate, C&I, working capital facilities, lines of credit, term loans, and other complex commercial structures. Experience with financial modeling and commercial credit analysis platforms. Strong Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Word and PowerPoint. Familiarity with digital banking, workflow automation, and technology-enabled credit processes. Experience implementing improvements to commercial underwriting and credit approval processes.
