Science and Technology Corporation (STC) is seeking an experienced Structural Welder/Fabricator to support our NASA customer at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

We are looking for a highly skilled, self-starting craft professional with a strong background in structural fabrication, MIG/flux-cored welding, mechanical assembly, and rigging. The ideal candidate is more than a production welder, they are an experienced fabricator and mechanical problem solver capable of taking an engineered concept or drawing and safely turning it into a completed, functional structure or mechanical assembly.

What to Expect

The successful candidate will work onsite at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Work will include both shop fabrication and field installation/support activities.

This position requires an individual who can move comfortably between welding, fabrication, mechanical work, and rigging rather than specializing exclusively in one area. Much of the work is custom or one-of-a-kind and requires sound judgment, craftsmanship, adaptability, and the ability to solve problems as they arise.

• Work may require climbing, lifting, working from aerial platforms, and working around machinery and lifting operations.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate, fit, weld, assemble, modify, and install custom structural and mechanical hardware in accordance with engineered drawings, sketches, specifications, and field requirements.
• Perform high-quality structural welding with primary emphasis on GMAW (MIG) and FCAW (flux-cored) processes.
• Lay out, fit, and fabricate structural steel components, frames, platforms, supports, brackets, equipment bases, and other custom assemblies.
• Perform mechanical fabrication and assembly involving bearings, shafts, couplings, bolted connections, equipment supports, and other mechanical components.
• Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication requirements.
• Plan fabrication sequences and determine practical methods for completing complex or one-of-a-kind work.
• Perform field measurements, layout, fit-up, modification, and installation of fabricated assemblies.
• Support equipment installation, removal, repair, and modification activities.
• Perform rigging activities associated with positioning, assembling, installing, and removing structures, machinery, and mechanical equipment.
• Safely select and use slings, shackles, hoists, chain falls, come-alongs, lifting devices, and other rigging equipment appropriate for the load and task.
• Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, aerial/man lifts, and related material-handling equipment as required.
• Utilize common metalworking equipment and cutting processes including saws, grinders, drills, Oxygen/Acetylene, plasma cutting, and carbon arc gouging.
• Troubleshoot fabrication and mechanical problems and work with engineers, technicians, and other crafts to develop practical solutions.
• Communicate effectively with supervision, engineering personnel, project teams, and customers regarding job status, technical issues, material needs, and schedule.
• Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, workmanship, housekeeping, and protection of customer equipment and facilities.
• Work independently as well as collaboratively with other welders, fabricators, machinists, technicians, engineers, and skilled trades.

Job Requirements

• 7+ years of progressively responsible welding, structural fabrication, mechanical fabrication, industrial maintenance, millwright, or closely related experience.
• Strong demonstrated proficiency with GMAW (MIG) and FCAW (flux-cored) welding of carbon/mild steel.
• Strong structural fabrication and fit-up experience.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication specifications.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience assembling, installing, modifying, or repairing mechanical equipment and fabricated systems.
• Demonstrated experience performing rigging and material-handling activities involving structural components, machinery, or mechanical equipment.
• Ability to safely operate or work around overhead cranes, forklifts, hoists, aerial lifts, and similar equipment.
• Experience with common metal cutting, preparation, grinding, drilling, and fabrication processes.
• Ability to perform accurate layout, measurement, fit-up, and fabrication work with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving ability in shop and field environments.
• Ability to consistently produce high-quality welds and fabricated assemblies that meet applicable inspection and acceptance requirements.
• Ability to pass required STC and Government background checks.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record for operation of company vehicles.
• Candidate must be able to pass applicable welding qualification testing required for assigned work.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of industrial structural welding/fabrication experience.
• Experience in aerospace, shipyard/naval, power generation, industrial construction, manufacturing, or other technically demanding environments.
• Experience planning and executing complex or critical lifts.
• Experience with SMAW and GTAW in addition to GMAW/FCAW.
• Experience welding stainless steel and aluminum.
• Experience with piping fabrication and installation.
• Experience working with welds subject to visual and/or nondestructive examination such as PT, MT, UT, or RT.
• Experience estimating material, labor, and fabrication requirements for custom work.
• Experience coordinating fabrication activities with engineering and project personnel.
